FUNagories

Intended population: Substance abuse

Purpose: The purpose of FUNagories is to identify leisure activities in multiple different
environments.

Goal: To have participants identify appropriate leisure activities given in each category.

Objectives: At the conclusion of the activity, a participant will be able to list at least 3
different leisure activities in multiple environments.

Appendix A Planning Worksheet:

1. The overall goal of FUNagories is to have participants identify appropriate leisure

activities given in each category. Leisure education content that will be addressed in
FUNagories is social skills and leisure resources (Stumbo, Wardlaw, 2011, p.48). The
object of the game is to appropriately answer the activities listed on the cards while
raising a hand in order to answer.

2. The participant objective in FUNagories is to have more knowledge on different

leisure activities that exist in multiple environments. At the conclusion of the activity,
participants will have gained knowledge in various leisure activities in different
environments.

3. FUNagories is an interactive social game with 25 cards of 5 different leisure

categories where participants will expand their knowledge on leisure activities.

4.

* Play will start when participants are formed into two teams (teams of 5 preferably),
which the therapist will select.

* The therapist shuffles the 25 cards and then selects a card and holds it up for both teams
to see.

* Teams score points by appropriately identifying an activity listed on the card. Members
of each team must raise their hand in order to answer. Failure to raise hand results in the
other team getting the point.

* A score sheet will be used by marking tallies on a piece of paper, which the therapist
will be facilitating the tallies. One tally represents one point. Each team will have their
own column where tallies will be marked.

* Once all 25 cards have been played, whichever team has the most amount of tallies,
wins the game.

* Whichever team wins gets to pick collaboratively on the next game the group will play
next time there is a therapy session.

* The participants cannot vary the rules.

5. If participants do not want to play competitively, groups can go through the cards and
play the game as one team, increasing their knowledge of leisure activities.

6. Different categories could be placed on the cards in order to achieve a different overall
goal. For example, sports could be a category and participants would have to identify
types of sports, which would have an overall goal of increasing knowledge of different
types of sports.
