The Hollywood Guessing Game!

Answer Key & Student Example

Directions: For each actor/actress that appears on the screen, guess the name, age, gender, ethnicity, the
number of movies or TV shows each person has been in, and the number of awards each person has
received. At the end of the game, in the last column of the table below, mark whether or not you guessed the
actors/actress name correctly. Good luck!

Notes to the Reader

The table for the student guesses was removed for clarity.

Example student input and other acceptable answers will be in red text.

A student example for inputting the data into CODAP can be found at the following link:
https://codap.concord.org/releases/latest/static/dg/en/cert/index.html#shared=25324.

How did you do? Now, lets investigate!

Directions
1. Now that youve written down your guesses and checked whether or not you guessed the actors name
correctly, go to the following link to compare your answers to the rest of the variables:
https://goo.gl/pJsxA9. How did you do?

Answers depend on the student, but some acceptable answers include:

My guesses were very accurate.
My guesses were not at all accurate.

2. Fill in the empty columns with the information that you collect on your Hollywood guessing game
worksheet.

A student example for inputting the data into CODAP can be found at the following link:
https://codap.concord.org/releases/latest/static/dg/en/cert/index.html#shared=25324.

3. Explore the data set and see if you can identify any possible correlations between variables. Do you
notice anything interesting or intriguing? Were you surprised by anything?

Answers depend on the student, but some acceptable answers include:

I was surprised the Clint Eastwood has won over 100 awards.
I did not notice anything interesting or intriguing.

4. Create two dot plots one for actual age and one for guessed age. Compare the distributions of the
guessed age and the actors actual age. Are they similar or different? Explain.

Answers depend on the student, but some acceptable answers include:

The distributions of guessed and actors actual age was somewhat similar. The mean for
age was 48.88 while the mean for my guessed was 44.44. The standard deviation for my
guesses was also larger than the standard deviation of the actual ages.

Example Student Analysis for Question #4

5. Do you think this data set is valid for making inferences about all Hollywood actors? Why or why not?

Acceptable answers:
No, because the majority of the actors and actresses in this data set is American. Not all
Hollywood actors are America.
The sample size is too small to make inferences about a population.
The actors may not have been picked randomly.

6. Now create a new dot plot in CODAP and make your x-axis your guessed age and your y-axis your
actual age. What do you notice about the data? What type of correlation does it have.

Answers depend on the student, but some acceptable answers

include:
There is a positive correlation between age and guessed
age.
Theres a linear pattern or linear relationship between age
and guessed age.

Example of what a student may see for Question #6.

7. Now compare you new dot plot to the two dot plots you created in question 4. What do you notice about
the data when you compare it to the other two dot plots. Do you think there are certain data points that
are affecting the data more than other points?

Answer depends on student guesses.

8. Use CODAP to graph a movable line. Move the line until you think it fits most of the data. What is your
movable line?

Answers depend on the student, but one example answer

would be
Age = 1.05 (Guessed Age) + 0.26

Example of what a student may say for Question #8

a. Using the movable line you found, what would your guess age be for an actress who is actually
20 years old.
Answers depend on the student, but one example answer would be
Age = 1.05 (Guessed Age) + 0.26 = (1.05)(20) + 0.26 = 21.26

b. What about if they were 0 years old? Does this prediction make sense? Why or why not?

Answers depend on the student, but an acceptable answer may be along the lines of...
No, it does not make sense because if we guessed that they were 0 years old, they
would actually be 0.26 years old.
If someone is not born, then they cannot be 0.26 years old.

9. Use CODAP to calculate a least squares line for age and guessed age. What is your least squares
line?

Answers depend on the student, but one example answer would

be
Age = (0.88)(Guessed Age) + 9.8

Example of what a student may see for Question #9

c. Using the least squares line calculated by CODAP, what would your guess age be for an
actress who is actually 20 years old.

Answers depend on the student, but one example answer would be

Age = (0.88)(Guessed Age) + 9.8 = (0.88)(20) + 9.8 = 27.4

d. What about if they were 0 years old? Does this prediction make sense? Why or why not?
Answers depend on the student, but an acceptable answer may be along the lines of...
No, it does not make sense because if we guessed that they were 0 years old, they
would actually be 9.8 years old.
If someone is not born, then they cannot be 9.8 years old.

Mystery Actor/Actress

Directions
10. Make a guess for how old you think our mystery actor is. Use your movable line from question 8 and
the least squares line from question 9 to calculate the actors actual age. Write down your answer here.

Answers depend on the student, but an acceptable answer may be along the lines of...
I guess that Keanu Reeves is 40 years old.
Movable line: Age = 1.05 (40) + 0.26 = 42.26
Least squares line: Age = (0.88)(40) + 9.8 = 45

11. How close was your answer to the actors actual age? Was your model for age and guessed age
accurate? Why or why not?

Answers depend on the student, but an acceptable answer may be along the lines of...
My guess was/was not accurate.
My model for age and guessed age was not accurate because my guess was not close
enough.
My model for age and guessed age was accurate because my guess was close enough.

12. Discuss amongst your classmates. Who had the most accurate model?

Answer depends on student answers.
