Introduction
with the meaning and writing of the 3,000 most frequently used traditional
Chinese characters. A parallel set of volumes has been prepared for simplified
characters. Although there is considerable overlap in the selection and arrange-
ment of the characters, as well as in the mnemonic devices employed, you
are advised to stick with one set of books or the other. As we explained in the
Introduction to Book 1, combining your learning of traditional and simplified
characters is likely to slow down progress and create confusion. That Introduc-
tion also provides further details about the approach followed in these books
and the rationale behind it.

based on personal memories and learning preferences. Book 2 disregards this
progression. Even in the early pages, one will find mere plots and listings of ele-

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors would like to reiterate their thanks to Robert Roche
for his insight, encouragement, and generous assistance over the long years this
project has been in the works. The staff and fellows of the Nanzan Institute for
Religion and Culture in Nagoya, Japan, made our task a lot easier and provided
just the right atmosphere for collaboration. Thanks, too, to Brigham Young
University-Hawaii for its support of the project. Tsu-Pin Huang, Yifen Beus,
and Pao-Ho Wan assisted us with their expertise on numerous occasions. Pat
Crosby, Keith Leber, and Nadine Little of University of Hawai'i Press deserve
mention for patiently seeing this book through its editing and production. A
special word of appreciation is due Helen Richardson and the Richardson chil-
dren. Without their willingness to make do without a husband and father for
weeks at a time, concentrated periods of work in Japan over the past several
yearswould not have been possible.

comments, reactions, and suggestions since the appearance of Book 1. Their
feedback has not only made for important improvements; it has confirmed our
confidence that we are on the right track.

Lesson 5
You will notice that in most cases only the primitive elements
are given below, without any detailed story or story plot. Book 1 progresses
from full stories to simple plots to component elements. The idea is to gradually
turn more and more of the creative work over to the learner. If you feel you are
not quite ready to venture off on your own at this point but still want to study
the two books together, you might hold off on the lessons of Book 2 until later,
when you are more comfortable with inventing your own images and stories.

To remember this character, think of the famous calligrapher

and founder of the esoteric Buddhist tradition, Kukai. He is
said to have been able to write five poems simultaneously by
holding brushes in his mouth, hands, and feet. You do him one
better by having your fingers fitted out with ten small brooms.
Dip them in ink and watch as they move across the paper all at
once with lightning speed, each leaving behind a distinct shape.
At first it looks like no more than a smudgy trail offootprints,
but if you look closely, you will see that they are Chinese char-
acters arranged into a classical poem. Now that is much more
nimble than Jack and his candlestick! [11]

artifacts confirming that the origins of synchronized swimming
go back to the Tang Dynasty. The presence of skimpy swimsuits
and nose plugs lying at the bottom of what was once a natural
pool is said to constitute persuasive scientific evidence that they
perished in sync. [13]

The butler pulls a miniature rake out of his waistcoat to scrape

This character is not as unfamiliar as it looks at first. After the
first two strokes of parade, you draw in the primitive for bunk
beds, letting the second stroke double up with the second stroke
of parade. Then comes the feudal official, and finally the rest of
parade.
This parade of feudal officials are all running at top speed,
bunk beds in hand, toward the beach, en route to the annual
surfboarding competition. The sport was short-lived because
!
of the high morality rate among the athletes. Only several cen-
turies later did the Hawaiians rescue the art of surfboarding
by replacing the box springs, mattress, and bedstead with a flat
plank. [14]

mystic wisdom, its own coffin (the hood). The walking stick that
separates the two elements helps the picture of the little worm
cutting itself off from contact with the outside world, but as a

the bottom of the primitive, we see a sturdy spike driven into
the ground (and hence hiding the hook at the end) to serve
as a stand for the cauldron to rest on. Above is a pair of animal
legs that are attached to the bottom of the vessel as two of its
legs. The whole thing sits under a large glass cover that func-
tions as a steamer lid. Oh, yes, and that one mouth refers to the
tiny little opening at the top for letting the steam escape like
you might imagine in an ancient pressure cooker.
Note that in the hand-drawn form, the human legs are in fact
drawn as animal legs, as we indicated in the little story above.
This is not the first time we have met with this anomaly. [10]

Postscripts
Postscript i
If you have made your way successfully through all 3,000 char-
acters covered in the foregoing lessons, you have every right to heave a great
sigh of relief. But before you get too comfortable, there are a couple of Post-
scripts we would like to add.
First of all, in compiling a list of characters for these books, the primary
criterion was frequency of use. At the same time, other considerations per-
suaded us to allow a small number of characters to slip in that fell just shy of
our frequency criteria. Some of them helped reinforce the learning of impor-
tant primitive elements. Others helped clarify the special method of ordering
followed in these pages. Still others were just so simple to learn that we could
not making an exception of them.

Now the story is told of a strange dream Flank had one night
that led to the composition of one of his most famous ballads.
Chinatra recalls in his memoirs that he dreamed he was travel-
ing a back road that led to the city of Guangzhou astride his
magnificent horse, Biang, who trotted proudly, its tail woven
intotwo long braids fluttering in the breeze. Suddenly and with-
out warning his mount collapsed and died. Days passed without
anyone appearing on the deserted road, and Flank grew weak
and disoriented.
On the verge of starvation, and in an act of desperation, he
unsheathed his trusty saber, cut a hole in the flesh of the horse,
and took out the heart to eat. Leaning against the carcass, he
began to croon a dirge for the poor departed beast. The words of
the song carried to two cocoons nearby, inspiring the beautiful
butterflies inside to break out and take flight. Thinking it a good
