Week 2: Divergent and Convergent Thinking Help

Week 2: March 5 March 11

Welcome to week 2! This week we will include critiquing, some small drills on idea generation, and
the beginnings of peer evaluation. The main lectures are on Critiquing and on Divergent and
Convergent Thinking. We'll also recap of some examples from the exercises completed for the
course and we'll talk about them. We'll do this each week as the course proceeds.
Your homework this second week includes our first peer evaluation of the different that was just
completed; before you start to participate, however, you will need to have submitted your Eat DSD.
See the video on Critiquing for hints and directions; the goal here is to help others develop their
ideasand in doing so you'll also improve your own ability to create better ideas.

This week's homework also includes another 'do something different', this time to wear someone
different. For all DSD's we'd encourage you to post your DSD in the Forum to share your exploits
with others in the class; here and in the face-to-face version, it's the work that is done by learners
that makes the class fun, interesting, and a good learning experience.

The videos will deal with two topics; first, looking at the concepts of divergent and convergent
thinking, two different ways of thinking we all use; and second, the beginnings of the simple drills we
can use to build our creative capacity. Not only do we need to know about creativity and to attempt
certain challenges, we can also build our idea generating capability through practice.

Finally, you'll need to take the quiz on the Newsweek article and begin the readings in the Johnson
book, Where Good Ideas Come From. While we are building our skills and changing our habits, we
also need the supporting knowledge about creativity; the readings for this course are a beginning for
understanding more about creativity.

Homework, due Tuesday, March 11, 23:59 PM CST(-006) : Complete DSD 2 [Wear], complete evaluations
for DSD 1[Eat], OAE idea generation exercises, Newsweek quiz.
