be introduced.
Now that we have finished up with Under the Sea we are going to
start to learn all about dinosaurs!
We are going to talk about what we know and what we would like to
know about dinosaurs

1. To encourage the class to think about what they know about Dinosaur book 10 Big
dinosaurs read the book 10 Big Dinosaurs by Beverly Randall Dinosaurs by Beverly
Randall
First before we start to collect all of our information on dinosaurs lets
get our brains thinking about them by reading this book called 10 Big
Dinosaurs

Make sure that before you start everyone in the class can see the
book

Whilst reading the book comment on what the dinosaurs are doing to
keep the class focussed on the task.

2. After the book is finished talk about what the dinosaurs are doing in
the book to open dialogue in the class and introduce the concept of
fiction and non-fiction.

Do we really think that dinosaurs would file their nails with a nail file?

No they probably wouldnt have, this story about dinosaurs is fiction


that means that its not real

Does anyone remember from library class what we call books that
are based on facts or are real?

Those ones are non-fiction and we have a couple up in the class


library that you can look at in silent reading time.

3. Start the KWL process with a think-pair-share discussion about what

we know about dinosaurs.

Now we are Lets look at what we as a class know about dinosaurs.

What I would like you to do is close your eyes and have a think about
all the things you know about dinosaurs.

When I ring the bell I would like you to open your eyes.

Now turn to your partner and take it in turns telling each other your
ideas.

Some people are going to know a lot about dinosaurs and some
people wont know that much about dinosaurs and thats ok that is
why we are going to share.

4. Collaborate the information on a large piece of paper on the board. Large piece of paper or

Now who would like to tell me something they know about dinosaurs?

Write 4-6 points on the whiteboard about the points that the class
have come up with.

Model the use of the non-fiction text by using the book to look up any poster or non-fiction text
unknown spellings of names of dinosaurs or the poster with the
spellings

5. Hand out the dinosaur worksheet about What I know about
10 mins
dinosaurs and ask them to return to their desks and write down two
main points. Circle to the room to assist when necessary.
Refer them to the board if they get stuck and encourage early finishes
to write additional points.

Remember to tell them to put their names on the top of the worksheet

6. Once they have completed the activity sit quietly or colour in the page
whilst they are waiting for everyone. Once they are finished have
them hand me their worksheets and return to the mat.

7. Now that we have established what we know lets look at what we Large piece of paper or

ones ate plants

Include that question on the board.

Ask for students to contribute by raising their hands to answer.

10 mins 8. Once there are 4-6 points on the board, hand them the what I would
like to know about Dinosaurs worksheets and ask them to return to
their desks and complete the worksheet. Circle to the room to assist
when necessary.

9. Once they have completed the activity sit quietly or colour in the page

10. Once they have finished the worksheet they can hand them to me
and sit on the mat for the recap.

We already know so much about dinosaurs but there is so much to


learn!

We have a few questions about what we would like to learn about


dinosaurs this term some of these questions we will cover but
where could we look to find the answers if we wanted to?

Look for answers like:


-ask someone
-google
-non-fiction books

11. Pack up ready for lunch

When I say can everyone please go back to their desks and pack up
ready for lunch.

12. Check for knowledge of concept by checking worksheets.
