Bailey and Rachel Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 4th

ISTE-Student Standard: Innovative Designer

4a. Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories,
creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
4b. Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers
design constraints and calculated risks.
4c. Students develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.
4d. Students exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with
open-ended problems.

South Carolina Content Standards:

4.S.1A. Conceptual Understanding: The practices of science and engineering support
the development of science concepts, develop the habits of mind that are necessary for
scientific thinking, and allow students to engage in science in ways that are similar to
those used by scientists and engineers.
4.A.1. Creating Works of Visual Art: The student will demonstrate competence in the
use of ideas, materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of visual art.

Lesson: Teaching basic engineering

Objective: Teach students how to visualize, design, and create a basic car

Materials: Rubber bands, straws, bottle caps, toothpicks, hot glue (instructor use only), and
draw.ing pad app

Procedure:

12:0012:15 To intrigue students, begin with video Whats An Engineer? and briefly explain
lesson for today while answering childrens questions

12:1512:30 Use visual aids of pictures of cars and how other people have made cars with
different materials. Video example included on weebly.

12:3012:45 Put the children at different tables, and hand out supplies. Demonstrate to them
what the project is but overall allowing children to create a prototype on their Ipads using this
draw.ing pad app provided.

12:451:45 After each groups prototypes are approved and the group is on track, allow the
student to begin crafting their cars and give the students ample time to complete this project. Go
around and help them construct their cars and answer any questions. Hesitant to complete any
of the task for them, allowing them to learn and construct.
Bailey and Rachel Lesson Plan

1:452:00 Clean up any leftover mess and allow each group to display whether or not their
final car works correctly.

2:002:15 Have a final wrap-up with the children with a question and answer period about
what was the hardest part of the project, what would they have done differently, and what did
they learn. Be sure to repeatedly address the purpose of the lesson, this will solidify that they
understand the lesson completely.

Homework: Have them redesign another car using similar of different materials on paper
encouraging creativity and functionality.
