Scavenger Hunt Directions

Review the answer sheet to make sure the questions and answer meet with your satisfaction. If not, you
will need to adjust the answer sheet and the corresponding page that is to be printed for the actual
scavenger hunt. This scavenger hunt contains 16 questions involving multiplying and dividing
monomials with exponents. The hidden message is Power of Exponents.

Once the questions, answers and letters are corrected to your own specifications, (either by hand or by
altering the pages in this file and printing them out), fold the top of the paper back, so that the answer
is no longer visible. Flip the page over. The answer should appear on the bottom edge of the folded page.
Tape what was the top of the page to the back of the paper. Tape is not absolutely necessary, but it will
prevent the paper from becoming unfolded. Now fold the other side over so that the Letter covers up the
question, but not the answer.

Use double sided tape, or tape circles to secure the papers to various areas of your room. Try not to put
them up in order. Magnets can be used to secure it to whiteboards, or pins can be used to secure them to
corkboards.

Pair up students based on ability. Students will be asked to create their own answer sheet with a 4
column table, or use the form provided. One column is labeled letter this is for the letters of the secret
phrase. The second column is labeled Question. Students will copy the questions into this column. If
you are using lengthy word problems, you may want to omit this column. The third column is labeled
scratch work, for obvious reasons. The fourth column is for the answer. Students should label the top of
the page with an appropriate title, the partners names, the date and the period number. First year
teachers may want to note that you will generally have to be specific that the students write out their full
names.

Students will be asked to go to any one of the scavenger hunt papers, and write down the letter of that
paper on their answer sheet. Then open the paper and copy the question down. Work out the problem
showing your work in the scratch work area. Write the answer you get in the answer column. Find the
next question by looking for the paper with your answer on the bottom of the paper. Once you have
located it, repeat the previous steps to find your next paper, eventually you will spell out a secret phrase.
You could offer a prize to the first partners finished to heat up the competition. If so, make it very clear
that they have to have more than just the answers and the secret phrase answer to get the prize.
Otherwise some students will figure out the phrase before they have completed the exercise.

It is helpful to let the students know that there are 16 questions, and that they will only return to their
original answer once they have completed all 16 of the questions.
