AVL EXCITETM ACOUSTICS - INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS EXCITETM ACOUSTICS?

EXCITETM Acoustics is a tool for the

calculation of sound radiation in free
field from vibrating structures such
as engines and power units using
the Wave Based Technique (WBT).

EXCITETM ACOUSTICS USED METHOD

WAVE BASED TECHNIQUE (WBT)

WBT is based on an indirect Trefftz

approach
Acoustic model is divided into a
bounded region (meshed) and an
unbounded region
WBT model does not require a problem
domain discretization into small
elements
The size of the acoustic mesh elements
can be large and is independent of
frequency

TWO OPTIONS

1 - import of arbitrary predefined

meshes (FE format)

2 - use of the integrated field point

USE CASE INVESTIGATION OF ENGINE AND
POWER UNIT NOISE

THE CHALLENGE
Todays combustion engine development
trends lead to higher excitations
engine downsizing, downspeeding,
increase of torque
Requires to find optimal compromise
between weight reduction, efficiency and
NVH performance
Flexible multi-body dynamic analysis
provides accurate results for excitations
and structural response

Improvement of NVH analysis workflow -

evaluation of the acoustic behavior on
airborne noise results instead structural
vibrations only

USE CASE ASSESSMENT OF TRANSMISSION
NOISE

THE CHALLENGE
Bearing Force
Higher excitations due to todays trends
in engine development lead to more
dominant transmission noise caused by
gear whine and rattle excitations

Evaluation of structural response (e.g.

Structural Response
gearbox housing) only is not reliable

If and to what extent is gear whine or

rattle excitation finally leading to
annoying noise?

How effective are design measures to

reduce these phenomena?
