This article explores the potential of Ytterbium doped fiber cabling and its uses. Fiber cabling

has a large amount of flexibility in terms of length and thickness, but reaches a point around

1,500nm where power and data output are limited. With the introduction of Ytterbium doped

cable in a single-stage setup, cables can be slimmed down by 55% while losing almost no

efficiency. This cabling requires even less power input than a standard cable using a minimum of

10 watts. The new cabling also has a greater amplifier efficiency by a small, although not

insignificant amount. Pending the widespread availability of Ytterbium, all fiber lines that are

run in the future are expected to embrace this technology.
