A few weeks ago, we had 3 separate calls about display issues in NX9. 1 was going to have one of our guys write up a post to describe how tofixit, but then, thanks to the Siemens Solution Center, found it had already been done by Ben Broad, a Principal Applications Engineer for NX with Siemens GTAC. **The following article is ©2013 Siemens Produc permission. ** + Lifecycle Management Software Inc. IMPROVING EDGE DISPLAY QUALITY (THE “JAGGIES") IN THE NX GRAPHICS DISPLAY When you zoom into a small area on a large shaded part itis quite common to see curved edges that display similar to those in the image below. They are commonly referred to as “The Jaggies’ and at first ip hwwrw auilyine comblogd-ips-underslareing-lesselllins-inshe-grapics- display Subscribe to our Blog! This s because of the tesselltion settings that have been applied to the view, or the part, and are based on the Shaded View Face Scale View Preferences. & ‘common question that we are asked at GTAC is how to improve the display. ‘though smoothing out the display is not required in order to work on the edges, a simple solution may be to rightclick in the Graphies Window and select Update Display, but this daes not always work and youll find out why later on. Update Display, in most cases, causes NX to recalculate the tessellations of the displayed geometry in the current view, smoothing out the edges to produce a more visually pleasing result: However, you may find that you're continually repeating this procedure, and if you're working on a ‘complex par it can actually take a long time to re-tessellate. You may also find chat operations in your part appear to take longer and longer each time you update the display. This is because you're asking NX to recompute the tessellations each time you zoom into a specific region of the part and these micro regions maintain that re-tessellated geometry until you fit the display and re-tessellate the entire part, or you close and reopen the part. INXS has a new View Preference called Facet Seale, By default, this value Is set to Part and the size of the tessellations are based on the size of the part. Therefore, asin the example above, you would expect the ‘edges of a small hole to have large tessellations when the overall part is very large. ip hwwrw auilyine comblogd-ips-underslareing-lesselllins-inshe-grapics- display ERP (log/categorylerp) Featured ((olog/categoryifesturec) Femap (Uolog/category/ternap) Infor Syttine (olog/categoryrintor- syteline) lean Manufacturing Uolog/categoryllear- manufacturing) Maintenance Release (Ublog/category/maintena nce-release) New Features blog/category/new- features) Nxt ((olog/categoryinxt) NXCAD Tips (Ublog/category/nxccad- ips) NXCAM Tips (Ublog/categoryinxccam. tips) NXLicensing Ulog/categoryinx- licensing) Nx videos olog/categoryin«- videos) Promotions blog/category/promatio 13) Robot Machining (Ublog/category/robot machining) Siemens PLM Software ((olog/categoryisiemens. plm-software) Solid Edge Ulog/category/soia edge) Solid Edge Licensing Ublog/category/solis edgerlcensing) Solid Edge Tips Ublog/category/solid edge-tips) Solid Edge University 2014 (Ublog/category/slid tedge-universiy-2014) Solid Edge Videos Ulog/category/soid edge-videos) Synchronous Technology ((olog/categoryisynchron ous-technalogy) Teamcenter (Ublog/categoryrtearncent e Teamcenter Tips (Ublog/category/tearncent sprotr [NX Tips: Understanding Tesselatens inthe Graphics Display - Acuity et Scale Is set to Part, and the tessellations are based on the size of the part. you are Unlikely to see the issues described above on smaller parts. As parts get bigger the tessellaion wil become more obvious when you zoom into areas of the part, With Facet Scale set to Part, the display will not update as it did pre:NX9 when, for example, a blend is applied to an edge. This isto prevent unwanted view Updates (which in the past may have caused a user to have to walt while the view updated). This is also by design and a manual view update can always be completed by right clicking the graphics display and choosing Update Display. The other two Facet Scale ‘options, View and Fixed, provide behavior that pre-NX9 users are familiar with The View option will update the tessellations based on the current view scale and Fixed is based on ‘the Resolution Tolerance preference found beneath the Facet Scale preference. The quality ofall :hree Facet Scale options can be adjusted by choosing a different Resolution, which by default is set to Standard. This can be controlled further using the Refinement Factor found beneath the Resofution pull Using these options to improve the resolution may prevent you having to use Update Display frequently (an issue that was noted earlier on) but it should be noted that although increasing the Resolution improves the display, performance may be impacted as the number of facets in the display has increased land NX has to shade each ofthe facets, Ifa view does not update following 4 manual view update, check to see ifthe Facet Scalehas been set +0 Fixed. The only way to improve the tessellations inthis case is ‘o increase the Resolution or ‘the Refinement. If Facet Scale is set to View or Part check to see ifthe Update preference for the currently selected Facet Scale has been set to None. The Update pull-down has the options; Visible Objects, All Objects, and None. When set toNone, Update Display will not re-tessellate the geometry. Note that itis probably not advisable to set Update to All ‘Objects when working on larger parts as this will re-tessellate all objects, including those outside the current view bounds. ‘Another enhancement in NX@ isthe abilty to cache and save display facets within the part. This option to Save Disploy Facets is found in the Visualization Performance Preferences and is enabled by default. In NX9, select Flle->All Preferences->Visualization Performance. This functionality allows parts to open and display quicker than they did pre-NX9. This is particularly noticeable when changing displayed parts because the geometry in the display does not have to re- tessellate each time a new partis displayed, ip hwwrw auilyine comblogd-ips-underslareing-lesselllins-inshe-grapics- display ertips) Teamcenter Videos (Wolog/category/teamcent er-videos) RSS Feed (/1/feed) Archives February 2017 (elog/archives/02.2017) January 2017 (Wblog/archives/01-2017) November 2016 (olog/archives/11.2016) October 2016 (blograrchives/10-2016) September 2016 (elog/archives/09.2016) August 2016 blog/archives/08-2016) July 2016 (blog/archives/07-2016) June 2016 blograrchives/06-2015) May 2016 (elog/archives/05-2016) April 2016 log/archives/04.2016) March 2016 (olog/archives/03.2016) February 2016 blog/archives/02-2016) January 2016 (elog/archives/01-2016) December 2015, (log/archives/12-2015) November 2015 (olog/archives/11.2015) October 2015, (Wblogyarchives/10-2015) September 2015 (olog/archives/09.2015) August 2015 (blogvarchives/08-2015) July 2015 ((olog/archives/07-2015) June 2015 plog/archives/06-2015) May 2015 (olog/archives/05.2015) April 2015 (blog/archives/04.2015) March 2015 (olog/archives/03.2015) February 2015 Ublogvarchives/02-2015) January 2015 (olog/archives/01.2015) November 2014 logvarchives/11-2014) October 2014) (blog/archives/10.2014) September 2014 sprotr [NX Tips: Understanding Tesselatens inthe Graphics Display - Acuity Please refer to the What's New in NX9.0 Documentation (http:/supportindustrysoftware automation slemens.com/docs/nx/nx9/whatsnew90.pdf for more information on the enhancements mentioned in this article, -Ben Broad 7 Comments (tisha acutyinc comblog/nxS.vps-understanding.tessellations.in-the-graphics-splay#comments) James (http:Iwww.mactricksandtips.com) 11472016 04:16:58 me Perfect, exactly what | ws Joking epiy ay182016 0449.09 am “Thanks th atl.
