Question: Juan, Pedro, and Isko went fishing. Isko caught a

tilapia. Pedro caught a small hito that weighed 2 times more

than the tilapia. Juan caught a bangus that weighed 16 times

more than the hito. If the three fish was 38 pounds, how much

did the tilapia weigh?

First method we'll use will be highlighting the important details and here

they are.

Juan, Pedro, and Isko went fishing. Isko caught a tilapia. Pedro caught a

small hito that weighed 2 times more than the tilapia. Juan caught a

bangus that weighed 16 times more than the hito. If the three fish was 38

pounds, how much did the tilapia weigh?

Using visualization we determine that the fishes they caught are tilapia, hito

and bangus and they corresponding weight.

+ + = 38 lbs

We will guest and check and make an organize list of it.

weight
Tilapia 1 2 3 4
Hito 2 4 6 8
Bangus 16 32 96
Total 19 38 105
Next is eliminating possibilities

If we assumed that the tilapia weight 1 lbs, the hito will be 2 lbs

because it is twice the weight of the tilapia, and the bangus weight will be

16 lbs. The total weight will be 19 lbs. then this guest will eliminate because

it is less than 38 lbs.

weight
Tilapia 1 2 3 4
Hito 2 4 6 8
Bangus 16 32 96
Total 19 38 105

If the tilapia weight 3 or 4 as we can see in the chart, we actually didnt

finish the chart because the total weight will be too high.

The correct weight of the tilapia was 2 lbs; we will check it using a formula.

+ + = 38

2 16

Substitution:

2 + (2x2) + (2x16) = 38

2 + 4 + 32 = 38

Therefore:

The weight of fish caught by Isko which is the tilapia is 2lbs.
