LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Subject: Humanities- Geography Year Level: 5/6 Lesson No: 6

Topic: Research Project- Australia vs Duration: 60 minutes

Learning Purpose/Rationale:
Include a rationale which explains why you have chosen to teach the content in the way you have and why you have chosen the activities
outlined in the lesson.

The students have now explored Australian Geography, climate change, natural disasters and global management and decisions such as the
Mercy treaty and how Australia is changing the fishing industry. To continue to flow of learning the students will now bring this knowledge
together by means of a small group presentation. This project will be enquiry based learning with cross curriculum links to have an in-depth
understanding of the content. This lesson is predominately student centred because I want the students to continue to have their own ideas and
views about humanities and being able to choose the country they compare against Australia could be influenced by a personal view or
experience.
Focus on Australian Curriculum

1. Differences in the demographic, economic, social and cultural characteristics of countries across the world(VCGGK093)
2. Australias connections with other countries and how these change people and places (VCGGK098)
3. Differences in the demographic, economic, social and cultural characteristics of countries across the world(VCGGK093)
4. Interpret maps and other geographical data and information using digital and spatial technologies as appropriate, to develop
identifications, descriptions, explanations and conclusions that use geographical terminology (VCGGC090)

Learning outcomes:
1. Students have an understanding in Australian Geography and working efficiently in a group
2. Students are showing the inclusion of cross curriculum in research and can interpret maps and data
3. Students can make connections of similarities and differences across the world.

Assessment:

There will be no formal assessment in this lesson as students will be begging their enquiry based project. However, observations will be taken
how students are working together, what ideas they have and how students are choosing to present their findings. The introduction overview
will also allow for assessment of prior knowledge and understanding by student participation.
Teacher activities: Learner activities:
-Introduction overview of what we have learnt in past lessons. A list and some -Form a group of 3 people
ideas will be written on the white board. Students will be asked How do people - Choose another country to compare to Australia and begin
and environments influence one another? This will be used as a prompt to research (40 minutes)
begin thinking about the project (10 minutes) - Take part in the class discussion and listen to other ideas
-Explain the project and expectations. Clarify how to present data and students
can be creative on how they present their projects (5 minutes)
-Pack up (5 minutes)

Procedural steps:

1. The lesson will begin with an overview of what has been taught in previously lessons as well as a small activity of asking students to
identify difference countries on the class map of the world (on the wall) Outcome 2
2. Students will then be explained the task of their research project and asked to form groups of 3 they will be informed this project will
carry on over the next few lessons.
3. Each group will then have 10 minutes to choose a country to compare to Australia with the knowledge
that they have gained. Outcome 3
4. Once each group has selected a different country (only one country per group no overlaps) they can begin to use maps, books,
computers and any other resources they need to complete the task.
5. Students will be informed that if they require extra assistance they can come to the front of the room
6. Once all students are settled into the task observations and discussions can occur on how they will present their project and feedback
will be given on their initial progress Outcome 1
7. On conclusion of the lesson students will be asked to save their work or put it in a safe place ready to continue next lesson.

Catering for inclusion:

This lesson is mostly student focused to cater for all learning needs and levels. Students will be able to work at their own pace and chose how
they will present their project allowing for students that require extra scaffolding to receive this help. The start of the lesson will also engage
students by being chosen at random to take part in the learning activity of locating a country.
Teachers resources: Students resources:
- Whiteboard - Computers
- Whiteboard marks - Lined paper for note taking
- World map - Books
- Pre-printed of instructions for project - Maps
- Tables
- Chairs
- Pens

Learning space set-up:

Students will begin the lesson on the floor at the front of the room and then move to their tables or class computers.
