Case Study:

Eurotunnel: Eyes Wide Shut


The high-profile Eurotunnel shows how important contracts and agreements
are in project management. The case retrospectively allows us to analyse the
relative contributions of technical uncertainty, market uncertainty, and
behaviour alignment through contracts to the performance of the project.

Answer the following assignment questions:

1. Diagnose the performance problems of the Eurotunnel project on the


dimensions of cost (budget), schedule, scope and project quality.
2. What were the reasons for this performance? In particular, what role
did uncertainty play (both in the technology and in the market)?
3. Characterise the relationships among the key players in the project?
What were their respective interests and obligations?
