Helping hand cent years, Strathmores municipal election
transformed into one for the books on
Monday night, when all four female coun-
cil candidates secured a seat on the local
Page 18 government body and declared a gender
majority the first in Strathmores history.
Emotions ran high at 8 p.m. after polls
closed at the Strathmore Civic Centre and
a total of 3,259 ballots were processed.
While votes were tallied at 9:40 p.m. the
candidates were left waiting in anticipation
until 10:20 p.m. when results were publicly
announced.
Meanwhile, in Wheatland County, the
Walk for a cause outcome suggests residents wanted to clean
house by introducing new and younger
members and, like Strathmore, increasing
the number of women on council.
In Strathmore, Lorraine Bauer, Tari Cockx,
Melanie Corbiell and incumbent Denise Pe-
terson will be joining Jason Montgomery
and returning Councillor Bob Sobol at the
table as Strathmore town council repre-
sentatives.
With a sweeping victory in a two-horse
587-316-2000 race, newly elected Mayor Pat Fule cele-
brated a monumental 2,773 votes on Oct.

Cheadle wetland
study results revealed
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

A Cheadle wetland impact study and
recommendations were presented to
Wheatland County council on Oct. 10 by
spokespersons for ISL engineering, with
results to be included in the updated

YEAR
Cheadle Area Structure Plan.
The study identifies environmentally
sensitive areas, their importance and
protection, which will be used for long-
term planning.
Its hard to know what we have and
how to manage those features, unless we
know what we have, said Colton Nickel,
intermediate planner with Wheatland

ANNIVERSARY
County.
Historical photos, wildlife surveys,

SALE
soil samples, precipitation and snow
melt data, disturbance records and wet-
land conditions were part of the study.
An open house was also held in Chea-
dle with about 20 to 30 people in atten-
dance.
It was noted that the Cheadle area has
an agriculture base of tame pasture and
cultivated soil, situated in a low-lying

$5,000
area, near wetland, springs and water-
courses, with minimal infrastructure to
deal with drainage.
The area falls within the Grasslands
Natural Region, dominated by blue-
bunch fescue, mountain rough fescue
and Parrys oatgrass. Geodiscover, an
Alberta catalogue of geographical data,
lists the area with a relative wetland val-
ue of about $18,600 per acre.
Shallow wells and groundwater depos-
its range from zero to 4.5 metres below
the surface. There was a mean of about
400 mm of precipitation, and the water
catchment area is about 2,000 hectares.

Sensitive species including raptor
hawk, sharp-tailed grouse and three
mammals were observed. There were
45 avian species, including Swainsons
hawk and magpie whose nesting sites
were identified. All wetlands in the area
have been disturbed by railroad, proper-
ty development or cultivation encroach-

Active Living at Wheatland Elementary

Students of Wheatland Elementary School participated in
Activing Living Day on Oct. 5, to encourage the schools phi-
losophy of healthy, active living while promoting community
partnerships with local clubs and organizations which also
support active participation. Several organizations, includ-
ing Strathmore Minor Ringette, Lacross and Jumphouse
Gymnastics, were on hand to help students stay active.
Health promotion coordinator from Alberta Health Servic-

of proper hydration and nutrition and the Parent Advisory
Council kicked off their Big Crunch campaign by handing
out apples to every student to encourage healthy eating

Wheatland regional
deputy fire chief
ready for action
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Wheatland County has secured many
talented employees in the past and their
hire of regional deputy chief Mac de
Beaudrap is just another coup.
de Beaudrap
is no stranger to
fire services or the
Wheatland County
area, as he previ-
ously served as
fire chief in Strath-
more. He has also
worked in fire ser-
vices for the Town
of Cochrane and
County of Rocky
View. His firefight-
ing career expe-
rience extends to many communities
all over Alberta, and his reason for ac-
cepting the job at Wheatland County is
simple.
I sought out this position, said de
Beaudrap. I love the area and the peo-
ple.
The deputy chief position is a new
designation for Wheatland County fire
administration. de Beaudrap said he is
looking forward to challenges as they
present themselves, and expects his po-
sition will help expedite smooth inter-
actions in response to ratepayer needs.
There has been a lot of change in
this fire service and I think there is still
a great opportunity for growth, he said.
de Beaudrap currently reports to re-
gional fire chief Judy Unsworth and he
is responsible for training, fire inspec-
tions, fire investigations and public edu-
cation. Wheatland West and Carseland
fire crews are cooperatively supervised
under his direction.
de Beaudrap said he looks forward
to working with the teams and assist-
ing in their professional growth oppor-
tunities. He said there is a strong group
of collaborative partners in the current
municipal mutual aid agreements and
he expects those agreements will serve
southern Alberta well. He is impressed
with the current administration and said
pieces are in place to move the depart-
ment forward to meet future challenges.
We have all the right people in place
to deal with any change that comes our
way, said de Beaudrap.

Kings stunned by lowly Lightning at home

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

A brotherly connection couldnt el-

evate the Strathmore Wheatland Kings
to victory at home Oct. 14 against the
Stettler Lightning.
The Kings turned what looked to be
an easy win for the pickings into a 4-2
defeat at the Strathmore Family Centre.
While the coarse voice of bench boss
Shadoe Stoodley reverberated through
the concrete walls and into the hall-
ways and players exited the arena with
their heads bowed, one family was able
to salvage the evening event.
For the first time in their lives, Hayden
and Garret Vander Ploeg shared the
same ice and same uniform.
I would always watch him growing
up; we never played on the same hock-
ey team, just baseball, said Garret, who
is three years younger than Hayden
and two inches shorter. Its pretty cool
watching him out there now from the
ice and the bench. I would say we are
pretty in sync; we get dressed the same
way, he knows where I am out there
and I always know where he is.
