TOPIC: 4G (4th Generation)

I. Introduction
II. Context

a. What is 4G?

4G (also known as Beyond 3G), an abbreviation for Fourth-Generation, is

a term used to describe the next complete evolution in wireless communications.

As the second generation was a total replacement of the first generation

networks and handsets, and the third generation was a total replacement of
second generation networks and handsets, so to the fourth generation cannot be
an incremental evolution of current 3G technologies, but rather the total
replacement of the current 3G networks and handsets. The international
telecommunications regulatory and standardization bodies are working for
commercial deployment of 4G networks roughly in the 2012-2015 time scale. At
that point it is predicted that even with current evolutions of third generation 3G
networks, these will tend to be congested.

b. What are the objectives on making this 4G?

4G is being developed to accommodate the quality of service (QoS) and rate

requirements set by forthcoming applications like wireless broadband access,
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), video chat, mobile TV, HDTV content,
Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), minimal service like voice and data, and other
streaming services for "anytime-anywhere". The 4G working group has defined
the following as objectives of the 4G wireless communication standard:
o A spectrally efficient system (in bits/s/Hz and bits/s/Hz/site),
o High network capacity: more simultaneous users per cell,
o A nominal data rate of 100 Mbit/s while the client physically moves at high
speeds relative to the station, and 1 Gbit/s while client and station are in
relatively fixed positions as defined by the ITU-R,
o A data rate of at least 100 Mbit/s between any two points in the world,
o Smooth handoff across heterogeneous networks,
o Seamless connectivity and global roaming across multiple networks,
o High quality of service for next generation multimedia support (real time
audio, high speed data, HDTV video content, mobile TV, etc)
o Interoperability with existing wireless standards, and
o An all IP, packet switched network.
In summary, the 4G system should dynamically share and utilize network
resources to meet the minimal requirements of all the 4G enabled users.

c. Example of newest technology:

“CVSL-112”

Three band (tri band) multimedia cellphone with bright projector,

interactive touchscreen; WAP (wireless application protocol), Bluetooth, and big
1800mAh battery for extra long talk time and phone usage between charges. The
tri-band technology and open SIM card slot in this mobile phone will keep you
"unlocked" from any particular phone company and works on the network
frequencies used by more than 100 countries worldwide.
What makes the CVSL-112 even more unique is the projector feature.
Simply switch on the external display option and project your movies or data on a
wall. Perfect for fun or for meetings!
The main functions include Cellphone, projector, text and multimedia
messaging, MP3 and MP4 player .Additional Functions are digital camera, digital
video and e-book reader.

About the projector:

- Max distance from wall: Up to 5 feet (150cm). Projected image focus can be
adjusted.
- Max image size: Roughly 32 x 40 inches (80cm x 100cm). Depending on image
source quality.
- External Video Feed: Projection specs same as above.

This is a truly easy to use multimedia mobile phone with its friendly
touchscreen interface and well designed software that operates on interactive
touch screen action. Among the multimedia features included in this phone are
MP3 and MP4 players, 1.3mp Digital Camera, Image Viewer, Video Recorder,
and rich media environment messaging options. With the internal micro SD card
slot already containing a 1GB card, the phone comes out of the box ready to start
talking, listening to music, taking pictures, and watching videos.

d. What is 4G all about?

In conclusion, 4G is getting beyond expectations. Why? It’s all because

these kinds of technologies are truly reached impossibilities. They prove that the
word impossible doesn’t exist anymore in this generation.
The first aim of doing technologies, even before, is to make life easier. But
as of now, it is not the only reason why made these technologies. These were
made to capture the interests of the people especially those who are fond of
having these things.
These new technologies are a lot different than technologies before. It can
be instant or automatic. They are also very sensitive than before technologies.
Just by touching it or shaking it a little, it will work right away!
e. Why did I choose “4G” as my topic?

I choose this topic because of two reasons. First is because I like

exploring about new technologies. I’m a bit attached to them and a bit obsessed
to technologies. Second is, I think it is very helpful for us students to know about
the newest technologies nowadays especially us ECE students. Technologies
are in the line of our works. It may help us be inspired and be amazed. By that,
we can be pursued to study harder and better to be an excellent engineer some
day.
