Question 1:
Let us consider a two-bus system connected through a loss less transmission line where flat voltage
profile is maintained. The bus 1 voltage angle is higher than that of the bus 2. Determine whether the
following statements are true or false. Validate your verdict with proper reasoning. (5X2=10 Marks)

Question 2: A PV module is made up of 36 identical cells, all wired in parallel. With 1-sun insolation
(1 kW/m2), each cell has short-circuit current Isc = 3.5 A and at 27C its reverse saturation current is I0
= 510-10 A. Parallel resistance is considered as Rp = 6.5 and series resistance as Rs = 0.01 .

(a) Find the voltage, current, and power delivered by the module when the junction voltage of each cell
is 0.50 V.
(b) Set up a spread sheet for I and V.
(c) Discuss on your result in terms of maximum power output and power rating of the module.

Question 3: You need to install a PV system in the rooftop of your house. If all the electrical appliances
are switched on at the same time, the cumulative real power demand becomes 2 kW. In the market you

(a) Determine the number of modules required.
(b) Draw a schematic diagram showing the arrangement of the modules forming a PV array to supply
your house hold load demand.
(c) Determine- (i) the open circuit voltage, (ii) the short circuit current and (iii) maximum power and
(iv) voltage and current at maximum power point at standard test condition.

Question 4: The output dc voltage Vo of a step down (buck) converter is maintained at 5V by controlling
the duty cycle D. The input dc voltage Vd to the converter varies in the range of 5-40V. The switching
frequency fs of the converter is 20 kHz. The minimum load current Io of the converter is 1A. Assuming
ideal devices and components,

(a) Calculate the minimum inductance required for operation of the converter in
Continuous conduction mode.
(b) The converter operates with a dc input voltage of Vd =12.6V.Obtain the Filter capacitance C required
to keep the output voltage ripple factor V0/V0 1%
(c) Roughly draw the diode and inductor currents.

Question 5: Let us consider that a 660V (RMS) load needs to be supplied with apparent power of 0.632
MVA and power factor of 0.94 lagging as shown in Fig.1. Filter resistance and inductance R=0.002
Ohm and L=0.002 mH respectively. The triangular carrier signal frequency is 2000Hz and the
maximum and minimum value of the carrier signal is +1 and -1 respectively. Determine the control
signals required to generate appropriate PWM signals for the VSC. (15 Marks)
Question 6: Design a PV system to produce 1000 kW of power at 460V, 60Hz, three-phase ac system.
Determine the following: (15 Marks)
(a)Number of modules in a string and number of string in an array.
(b) Inverter and boost converter specifications.
(c) One line diagram considering the fact that the PV system is required to be connected at 11kV grid.

Question 7: A medium voltage fixed speed squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) based wind energy
conversion system using a 3 MW, 60 Hz, 1812 rpm generator, where a capacitor C is installed as a
power factor compensator. The parameters of the generator are listed in table I. The input impedance is
The system is connected to the transformer station of 3 kV at 60 Hz. Assuming the generator operates
under its rated conditions with the rated speed of 1812 rpm. Determine the following

(i) Slip of the generator
(ii) Stator current and stator power factor
(iii) Stator apparent, active and reactive power
(iv) The value of capacitor C (per phase, Y-connection) for the system to operate at 0.95 lagging power
factor.
