Chapter 1

1. The Moonstone got its name partly because of

its colour and partly because of superstition.

2. Anyone who tried to steal it would suffer.

3. Three Hindu priests belonging to the Brahmin

caste guarded it.

Chapter 2

1. Lord Herncastle was the brother of Colonel

Herncastle, who had committed murder to steal

the Moonstone.

2. She wanted him to stop working for her as a

gardener and to work in the house as her

steward.

3. She remembered that as children he had been

unkind to her.

Chapter 3

1. It was an area of quicksand at the end of one

of the walks that led from the Verinders home.

It shivered, and this is how it got its name.

but the servant could see a light under the door.

She heard the sound of a fire which was

strange, because it was June.

3. She went to Lucys cottage and bought a metal

box and two chains from Lucys father.

4. He suspected Rachel.

Chapter 7

1. She bought the cloth to make herself a new

nightgown.

2. She ignored him.

3. Rosanna had asked Lucy to hand the letter to

him personally.

Chapter 8
1. She hoped that her relatives would read the

material and become better Christians.

2. Godfrey Ablewhite was suspected of giving the

Moonstone to Septimus Luker as a guarantee

for a loan.

3. She wanted to see him about her will.

4. Mr Bruff did not believe that he had a motive

to steal the diamond, because if he married

Rachel he would be rich and also because he

was not under pressure to pay his creditors

back quickly.

Chapter 9

1. She believed that he was a fine man and that

he loved her very much.

Chapter 10

1. Mr Ablewhite became her guardian.

2. Mr Bruff told her that Godfrey was only

interested in marrying her so that he could use

her wealth to pay off his debts.

Chapter 11

1. A person had a year in which to pay back the

loan.

2. He understood that the diamond would be

returned to the thief at the end of one year

because it had been given as a guarantee for

a loan.

Chapter 12

that Mr Candy had given him as a trick to help

night of the theft by giving him opium and

watching to see whether he would repeat his

actions.

Chapter 15

1. It proved that on the night of Rachels birthday

party, Franklin Blake took the diamond while

under the influence of opium. What remained


unknown was what he had done with the diamond

after taking it from Rachels cabinet.

2. Two policemen were assigned to watch the bank

where Mr Bruff believed the diamond was being

held. Mr Bruff hoped that after the loan had been

paid back, Mr Luker would arrive to claim the

diamond and return it to the thief.

Chapter 16

1. He was a small boy who often helped Mr Bruff in

his work.

2. They found the sailor, whom they had seen in the

bank, lying dead on the bed. They also found an

empty box with a note stating that the box, which

contained a jewel of great value, was to be given

to Septimus Luker only.

3. The sailor was Godfrey Ablewhite.

Chapter 17

1. He had been suffocated with a pillow.

2. He was a gambler and had lost a large sum of

money.

3. They went to Bombay by ship. Before reaching

their destination, they disappeared.

Chapter 18

1. They got married.

Epilogue

1. Mr Murthwaite found the Moonstone shining in

the forehead of the moon-god while on a visit to


the holy city of Somnauth.
