BWI UNVEILS NEW ENERGY SAVING SOLAR PANELS
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) has
officially unveiled a new solar energy project.

Working in conjunction with Pepco Energy Services, the US airport has

installed a 505 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the top level of BWIs
daily parking garage.

The solar installation, which is projected to have a lifespan of at least 20

years, is part of a $20.9 million package of measures designed to reduce
energy usage and utility costs at the airport.

"By investing in smart, innovative solutions like this solar initiative, we are
creating jobs and making real progress towards our goal of generating 20% of
our state's energy needs from renewable sources by 2022, enthuses
Maryland state governor, Martin O'Malley.

The 505 kW solar project, installed on a canopy system on the top level of
the BWI Marshall Daily Garage, is designed to produce over 600,000 kilowatt This green project is another important, high-profile demonstration
hours (KWh) of electricity each year. of our commitment to renewable energy and environmental

distribution system and is designed to reliably produce energy for more than Marshall.
20 years.
The solar project created both environmental and economic
benefits for BWI Marshall.

In 2010, BWI Marshall initiated a contract with Pepco Energy Services

to develop a programme that would create significant energy and
operational savings.

Beyond the solar project, other energy performance measures

include the installation of comprehensive lighting improvements,
water conservation measures, central utility plant improvements,
and enhanced controllers on escalators and moving sidewalks.

It is expected that the infrastructure improvements and renewable

technologies will help BWI Marshall to conserve energy, reduce
environmental impact, and save money.
Chevron Energy Solutions, a unit of Chevron Corp., and Santa
Monica College recently completed an energy efficiency
project that included these solar panels. The project is
expected to save the college more than $14 million and
reduce carbon emissions by more than 1,500 metric tons.

The project includes a 408-kilowatt solar system, which

provides electricity through solar panels located on the
top level of two parking structures that is generating
power for the two garages and a significant portion of the
Business Education Building. Chevron Energy Solutions
designed, engineered, installed and operates the solar
system and maintains and guarantees the systems
performance. SMC has also improved its energy efficiency
through a campus-wide lighting retrofit, variable speed
drives, new heating hot water boilers, fire alarm system
and emergency circuit upgrades that were also installed
by Chevron Energy Solutions, college officials said.
We are committed to academic excellence, global
responsibility and educational, environmental and
economical awareness, said Dr. Chui L. Tsang, president
of SMC. Our collaboration with Chevron Energy Solutions
allows us to reduce the amount of energy used and lessen
our colleges carbon footprint.
