AP Music Theory

Course Long Plan

Brief Description of Course
Course Description: AP Music Theory is an advanced level music course. Students in this class will
work towards a deeper understanding of the various building blocks of music: melody, harmony,
rhythm, meter, texture, and form. Students will seek to develop music writing skills through
analysis, composition, and notation. They will improve their musicianship through listening skills,
sight-singing, and harmonization at the keyboard and by singing. The work in this class is
equivalent to a first year college music theory class and culminates with the AP exam. The students
ability to read and write musical notation is fundamental to this course and the student must have
adequate performance skills in either voice or an instrument.

Text for first six weeks: Musicians Guide to Theory and Analysis: Chapters 1-6 and Tonal Harmony
Chapters: 1-2 Musical examples included from text.
Week 1-2
Written Skills: Basic notation, clefs, accidentals enharmonic equivalents, meter, grand staff
Aural Skills: Introduction to Piano keyboard, diatonic scales- Major
Sight-singing Skills: solfege syllables, diatonic scales and Curwin Hand-signs
Week 3-4
Written Skills: Scales: major and minor, relative keys, parallel keys, tonality, circle of fifths Minor
keys using Part One chapter 4 of the "Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis."
Aural Skills: Half and whole-step intervals, call and response, contextual listening, Rhythm - simple
meters, compound meters
Sight-singing Skills: singing and signing major scales and minor scales, singing intervals accurately
Week 5-6
Written skills: Intervals, inversions, augmentation and diminution, scale degree names, review of
minor scales(natural, harmonic, melodic)
Aural Skills: introduce rhythmic dictation, Melodic dictation of scales, interval dictation, beginning of
Sight-singing Skills: Intervals and inversions, sight-singing conjunct, tonal melodies from texts as
well as modes.
First six weeks exam: written: Key signatures, intervals (written and aural) major/minor scales,
modes. aural: dictation on intervals and familiar melodies, and modes. sight-singing: scales(major
and minor), hand signs, intervals and simple melodies (conjunct)and modes (determining type of
mode by visual and aural methods.

Text for second six weeks: Musicians Guide to Theory and Analysis: Chapters 7 and Tonal Harmony
Chapters: 3-4 with musical examples included from text
Week 7-8
Written: Review modes/scale degree names; introduce pentatonic scale and Whole tone scale;
introduce triad (major and minor) introduce chords in root position
Aural skills: Identify modes, pentatonic scales and whole tone scales. Conjunct, tonal melodic
dictation, compound rhythmic dictation, identification of chord quality
Sight-singing Skills: Singing melodies with intervals of a third, singing triads and arpeggiated
chords, writing in solfege on familiar songs
Week 9-10
Written Skills: Chords in first and second inversion; Roman numeral analysis; 7th chords (M, Mm,
m, half and fully diminished)lead sheet symbols
Aural Skills: Chords in root position, identify quality of chords, Identify quality of scales (major,
minor, pentatonic, whole tone), conjunct melodic dictation
Sight-singing Skills: Singing chords using solfege, scale degree names, and note names; singing
chords in all qualities
Week 11-12
Written Skills: Roman numeral analysis, inversion analysis on triads and 7th chords; Figured Bass
Aural Skills: Identification of chords in any inversion, contextual listening; melodic dictation
Sight-Singing Skills: Intervals of the fourth and fifth, intervals of the sixth; practice with melodic
solo and duet lines.
Second Six Week exams: written chords in all inversions, Roman numeral analysis, seventh chords,
quality of chords, dictation of melodies and chords, sight-singing of melodies, intervals and chords
using solfege, note names and scale degrees.

Text for third six weeks: Musicians Guide to Theory and Analysis: Chapters 11 and 14 and Tonal
Harmony Chapters: 6-8 and musical examples included from text.
Week 13-14
Written Skills: Introduction to voice leading: melodic lines; parallel motion; Root position part-
writing including doubling and second inversion chords
Aural Skills: simple harmonic progressions, identifying phrases, periods, motives and cadences
Sight-singing skills: chords and arpeggios in inversion, group singing of simple progressions
Week 15-16
Written Skills: Melodic structure and cadences, non-harmonic tones, chord progressions
Aural skills: Identifying chord progressions, melodic dictation, begin harmonic dictation of bass and
soprano lines
Sight-singing: singing soprano, alto, tenor and bass lines of Bach four part chorales
Week 17-18
Written Skills: Dominant seventh chords and applications, leading tone seventh chords, Review for
Mid-term exam
Aural Skills: expanded melodic dictation, continued harmonic progressions, progressions with all
forms of seventh chords
Sight-singing Skills: arpeggiation of seventh chords in all inversions
melodic sight-singing with non-harmonic tones
Mid-Term exam: written: chord building and identification, chord progressions, chord analysis (all
seventh chords and inversions)
Aural: identification of seventh chord qualities, melodic dictation, harmonic dictation of soprano and
bass line chord progression identification. Sight-Singing: melodies with intervals of 4th, 5th, and

Text for fourth six weeks: Musicians Guide to Theory and Analysis: Chapters 8-9 and Tonal
Harmony Chapters: 11-12 Musical examples to be used from texts.

Week 19-20
Written Skills: review of Roman numeral chord analysis, seventh chord inversions and qualities
Aural Skills: review melodic dictation of soprano and bass lines; chord progressions
Sight-Singing Skills: review singing of major/minor scales, chords, chord inversions, Bach chorales
by SATB.
Week 21-22
Written Skills: Non-chord tones, classification, passing tones, suspension and retardations,
embellishing a simple texture
Aural skills: Listening to contrapuntal lines, embellishing triads
Sight-Singing Skills: Chromatic Solfege Syllables, hand signs and scale-degree numbers
Week 23-24
Written skills: Beginning part writing in four voices; more identification of non-chord tones including
escape, anticipations, pedal points. Expanded study of 6/4 chords including cadential and passing
Aural Skills: more chord recognition, cadence identification, form identification
Sight Singing Skills: Melodic sight-singing with non-harmonic tones, two-part melodic material in
Fourth Six Weeks Exam: Written: types of non-chord tones, cadence identification, written chord
progressions Aural: Identify accidentals with their correct solfege/scale degree. Identify and dictate
chord progressions and soprano and bass notes Sight-singing: Chromatic scales with hand-signs
and solfege syllables, sight sing melodies with accidentals

Text for fifth six weeks: Musicians Guide to Theory and Analysis: Chapters 13-14 and Tonal
Harmony Chapters: 13-14 Musical Examples to be included from texts.

Week 25-26
Written Skills: Continued part writing in four voices: secondary triads, anticipation and suspension
Aural skills: continued chord recognition, cadence identification, form identification
Sight-Singing Skills: melodic sight-singing melodies with accidentals, individual and group sight
singing of one and two part melodies.
Week 27-28
Written Skills: Continue with secondary triads, modulation through common diatonic chords, key
Aural Skills: scale identification, harmonic dictation of S,T,B or S, A,B.
Sight-Singing Skills: sing sight reading examples from previous All-State Choir auditions, sing
arpeggiated triads
Week 29-30
Written Exercises: Modulation through alteration, chromaticism and common tones, secondary
Aural Skills: harmonic progressions, chord recognition, melodic and harmonic dictation (2 or more
Sight Singing Skills: Use chord matrix to identify each part, S,A,T,B, continue with All State Choir
Sight-singing exercises
Fifth Six weeks exams: Written: part writing, secondary triads, modulations (common chord or
alteration)Aural: identify modulation by common chord or alteration, Harmonic dictation with 3
Sight-Singing: individualized test over an All state audition exercise

Week 31-32
Written Skills: Secondary leading tone chords and resolutions, part writing with secondary
dominants and modulation
Aural skills: continued 3part dictation, melodic dictation with error detection
Sight-singing Skills: continued chord matrix singing in four-part harmony, continue with Bach
Week 33
Review for AP Exam using released exam excerpts, Answering AP Exam free-response questions and
scoring guidelines, sight-singing excerpts from previous exams
Week 34
Prepare for and take the AP Music Theory Exam
Week 35-36
Compose a 16 measure Composition using Finale Print Music 2009. The original composition should
be for four part instruments or voices. They must present and perform this final project for the class
as their Final Exam.

Content and/or Skills Taught:

Course Objective: At the end of this course, the student will:
A. Notate pitch and rhythm, accurately, in accordance with standard notation practices.
B. Read music in all clefs, including movable C clefs
C. Transpose music to any give major key and clef
D. Notate simple rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic exercises in major and minor keys
E. Sight-sing a simple melody in major and minor keys
F. Harmonize a melody with appropriate chord progressions and inversions
G. Realize figured-bass exercises with correct voice-leading
H. Decorate a simple four-part exercise with appropriate non-harmonic tones
I. Analyze the chords of a musical composition using Roman numerals and figured-bass
J. Identify basic forms and cadences
K. Identify modes

Major Assignments and/or Assessments:

Six Weeks exams with a Mid-Term and a Final Exam Project will serve as the major Assessments.
Aural quizzes will be given every two weeks and sight-singing quizzes will be given weekly.

How Course Meets Requirement: M-Audio Axiom 61 computer keyboard. Allows students to practice
their piano keyboard skills using a computer and earphones. The keyboard can be used to practice
scales, intervals, chords and chord inversions as well as to compose bass lines or four part exercises
with Finale Print Music(already loaded on the class computers.)
