School-Day of Non-violence and

January 30 is celebrated the School Day of Non-Violence and Peace.
The School Day of Nonviolence and Peace was founded in the year 1964 by the
Spanish poet and educator Lloren Vidal.
The date was not chosen at random but marks the day of the murder of one of
the greatest advocates of peace, non-violence, justice and tolerance among peo-
ples: Mahatma Gandhi (January 30, 1948).
The commemoration of this specific date, starting in 1964, was aimed at drawing
attention to the need for a permanent education for nonviolence, seeking to raise
awareness of PEACE, TOLERANCE, SOLIDARITY and RESPECT for HUMAN
RIGHTS.
Mahatma Gandhi was born in India in 1869 and is considered one of the leading
exponents of pacifism and nonviolent struggle for respect and realization of hu-
man rights and justice.
Within the ideal of peace and non-violence that he defended, two of his sen-
tences were:
"There is no way to peace! Peace is the way! "
"The struggle for the defense of human rights is perhaps the no-
blest cause a human being can devote himself to."
