AREA TG Operating Instruction For REV 0.00

UNIT - 3/4/5/6 Management of Turbine Drains Date : 25/ 02/2009

A PURPOSE:-
This document is prepared to guide the operating personnel for managing the turbine side drains during a unit startup ,
shutdown & normal operating condition in stage- II of NTPC /TSTPS .

B SCOPE: :-
This shall be applicable to all the 4 units of stage - II , TSTPS ( 4 X 500 MW Units ) .

C INTRODUCTION : -
Drains play an important role in any system charged with steam . This is basically provided to drain out
the condensate before charging steam in a pipeline & subsequently allows sufficient flow in the line for initial warm
up . Also this allows to drain the condensate during cooling of any pipeline .Normally the big headers like MS
/CRH / HRH are provided with drain pots where the condensate is expected to collect & subsequently they are
drained by operation of these drain valves . To avoid human interventions some of the drains depending on their
location & importance severity they are interlocked with certain logics or instruments like level switches & so on .

If the condensate is not properly drained & steam is charged into a line , then it will lead to severe
hammering in the line causing major damages & sometime forced outage of the units due to failure of the
support system . Hence due care is to be taken while operating these drains .

Each Motor Operated drain is provided with a manual isolating valve for isolation of the drain valve
depending on requirement . But in case of MAW 11 drain valve no isolation valve is provided . However a bypass
line with 6-10 mm orifice is provided for continuous bleeding .Some systems are provided with orifice operated
continuous drains for continuous bleeding of steam /condensate .At some places drains are provided with steam drain
traps which should always be kept in service .

D OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS :
The following instructions are to be followed during the Unit normal operation , Unit Hot & Cold start-up &
Unit shutdown conditions .

D-1 Normal Operation :-

Always ensure the SLC drain is kept ON .
Check all the Drain MOV ( Motor Operated Valve) are manually tightened and no passing is observed
indicated by high temp at the down stream of the MOV checked either through online measurement or
through Temp Gun at local .
If the temp is maintaining very HI (Suspected Passing) then the manual valve for the MOV can be kept
closed with proper record in the Log Book as well as the information to be made available in soft form .
Necessary WOC to be raised for such drains .

D-2 Unit start-up Operation :-

D-2.1 Hot Start-up
D-2.1.1. The Alternate drains connected to UFT are not to be opened at all such as .
( BP 101 ,BP 102,MS 419,MS 101,MS 102,HRH 101,HRH 102,HRH 604 )
D-2.1.2. Check the following turbine drains are opened as per SLC logic after the Unit Has tripped out .

MAL 11 Drain Before HPCV - 1 MAL 12 Drain Before HPCV - 2

MAL 26 Drain Before IV - 1 MAL 27 Drain Before IV - 2

D-2.1.3. Open MS/HRH Strainers drains to SDFT MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106 ( Operated from BHEL CRT ) immediately
after turbine tip out . On auto these drains open at SGC Shutdown programme at step 53 .
D-2.1.4. Open CRH Hdr Drain CRH 501 to SDFT . This drain actually operates on auto based on the Drain Pot Level
Switch actuation .
D-2.1.5. Ensure all the manual valves ( if anyone was closed ) of drains connected to the SDFT /FB-1& FB -2 / LP & HP FT
are opened as per the list attached as soon the unit has tripped .
D-2.1.6. Now ensure the temperatures are picking up down stream of the drain as soon as soon as steam flow established
( where ever on line measurement provided)
D-2.1.7. Now as the turbine rolling started the MS/HRH Strainers drains MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106 gets closed at step
13 .
D-2.1.8. After Unit is synchronisation & Load pick up is > 100 MW ensure all the following drains are closed on auto
MAL 11 Drain Before HPCV - 1 MAL 12 Drain Before HPCV - 2
MAL 26 Drain Before IV - 1 MAL 27 Drain Before IV - 2
MAL 65 Drain Before CRH NRV

MAL 55 Drain of Extraction Valve A 2

D-2.1.10. Check all the TDBFP drains are closed after TDBFPs are loaded .

D-2.2 Absolute Cold / Warm Start-up .

D-2.2.1. While pulling Vacuum keep the drains connected to vacuum system closed for faster pulling of vacuum . Then
slowly open one by one as per requirement .
D-2.2.2. Never operate both the main & alternate drain valve simultaneously , this will lead to vacuum drop in the system .
D-2.2.3. Ensure the manual valves of following drains connected to the UFT / SDFT /FB-1& FB -2 / LP & HP FT are opened
as per the list attached before charging MS Line .
D-2.2.4. The atmospheric drain s provided in MS /CRH / HRH line are to be kept open ( Crack ) for initial charging MS line
/ HP & LP Bypass system for release of condensate . They are to be closed after ensuring sufficient steam flow .
D-2.2.5. The Alternate drains to UFT are to be kept open initially for better Silica control in the Unit .
D-2.2.6. The Header Drains of MS/CRH/HRH Such as MS 417/419 , HRH 606/604 , CRH 501 are to be kept open till 20 %
steam Flow .
D-2.2.7. The MS/HRH Strainers drains MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106 are to be kept opened till rolling of TG set .

D-2.2.9. The temp points provided for the major drains are functioning indicated by the rise in temp when ever steam
flows in those drain .
D-2.2.10. For Charging HP/LP Bypass the HPBP Warm up Line Drains

D-2.2.11. Normally the drains are kept closed as soon as sufficient steam flow is established in the system . Such as
Close MS Line drains to IBD ( MS401/402) once the Main MS SV are full open .
Close the CRH hdr atmospheric drain after HP/LP bypass is charged & sufficient steam coming .
Close the MS /HRH Hdr Drains MS 417/419 , HRH 606/604 once HP /LP bypass is charged

D-2.2.13. The MS /HRH strainer drains MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106 are automatically closed once TG set Rolling started at
step 13 .

D-2.2.16. Check all the TDBFP drains are closed after TDBFPs are loaded .

D-2.2.17. Ensure the turbine casing drain MAL22 is closed after HPT casing temp attained > 320 0 C on auto .

D-3 Unit Shutdown Operation :-

When ever the unit goes under shut down , very care full drain operation management is to be followed . Some
times keeping additional drains open may lead to cooling of the turbine components . The situations will be
different with vacuum being maintained or killed .

D-3.1 If Vacuum is maintained .

D-3.1.1. The SLC drain should be kept ON .
D-3.1.2. As soon as the turbine is hand tripped or tipped ensure the following drains are opened on auto .
