Narrative Report

Apart from the last batch of students that have undertaken the course in
Practicum as part of the BS Industrial Engineering Curriculum, I have been given the
opportunity to actually apply my academic training experience for more than one
month to the workplace experience in the real world. The course has provided me the
venue to further improve my knowledge and competencies as an IE student for future
career objectives after Graduation. As a student trainee, I have been able to take
advantage of the tools and skills I have been equipped by my intensive academic
formation in my Colegio, to be capable enough in pursuing the different opportunities
available for us in the outside world and to be able to contribute and actively participate
in the endeavors of actual work experience.

My objective was to seek for an on the job training position where I can
effectively apply my cognitive and systematic skills from my academic training
experience as an IE student. With this goal in mind, I pursued my application to be a
student trainee at Wyeth Nutrition Philippines Cabuyao Factory. Fortunately, my
application was accepted and I was assigned in the Primary Production Unit (PPU) where
I can be able to contribute my knowledge and skills as a student trainee as well as to
personally improve in my chosen field.

I came to Wyeth on April 25 where I attended the CGMP or Current Good

Manufacturing Practices before entering the plant and to really know the guidelines of
the company. I started my on-the-job training in Wyeth on April 27. Maam Hannah
Monzon, of the Human Resource Department gave me a brief orientation regarding my
300-hour practicum under the PPU where I will be handled by Maam Iryn Laloy, my
Immediate Head as student trainee. I was introduced and welcomed in the unit where I
met Sir Rodel Munlawin, who stood as my Immediate Supervisor. He gave me an
orientation regarding the duties and responsibilities I have been tasked as their student
trainee.

My schedule started from 7:30am and ended at 4:00pm every day. My first week
at Wyeth was personally motivating and enhancing. I have been exposed to the whole
process of manufacturing milk. I was also exposed to the manufacturing plant of Wyeth
from processing of raw materials and turning it to a finished good. Aside from that, I was
also able to observe the dynamics of organization within the PPU area. It was indeed a
privilege for me to be a part of Wyeth as a student trainee as I was also able to become
actively involved in the entire production process. We also did 5S for the entire working
area of the managers. We were also given the chance to work with the Production
Inventory Controller. They taught us how to use SAP. Looking at the authorized persons
in using the SAP it was just easy using it but as we tried it and as we looked in to it, it
was very hard especially there are many commands and functions of SAP. We learned
that SAP is important or even other systems that provides end to end solutions for
manufacturing and distribution of products. We also did forecasting for total production
batches needed for a particular month. We also removed red tags in the boxes of milk
which means it is rejected and replenishing those items. We did inventory control, we
computed how many were fully done by each batch of production and how many were
the excess. Through the SAP system, we did the goods movement. It is where we
checked the delivery receipt or the goods receipt before transporting the goods to the
warehouse and distributing it to the customer. We also did stoppages and periodic
production events list with the use of Stoppages and Module System or the SAM
System. This is used to know if the line has runtime and what is its occupied time and
head count per day and per shift.

For several days, we were handed to the different production processes like
dispensing, Wet Process, dryer, and packaging lines to better understand every detail of
each process. They also taught us how they use TPM in their line like the use of color
coded tagging, proper cleaning and inspection and center lining of machines and
equipment. They also shared to us that they have a goal of having no defects, zero
impact on environment, no breakdown, small stops and no accidents.

From all of these tasks and experience we gained knowledge on how we can
apply our academic training experience in real situation inside the production. I learned
that the implementation of a TPM program builds a shared responsibility for equipment
that encourages greater involvement by plant floor workers or operators. This can be
very effective in improving productivity like increasing up time, reducing cycle times,
and eliminating defects. We learned that SAP is important or even other systems that
provides end to end solutions for manufacturing and distribution of products. I also
know now how important and what is the essential role of man, machine, materials,
environment, and method in the production. I realized that inventory management is
needed because it controls the count of materials which lessens the cost. It is also
important to manage the productivity of operators since they run the production line
because workers contribute to the efficiency of the production.

Different tasks were accomplished and we get used to work with operators to
supervisors, managers and even top mans. What I liked most about my whole OJT
experience was we manage to exercise our rapport with every single employee while
working on our assigned tasks. But especially, I will not forget all the technical skills I
gained through this experience because it molds me to become a better Industrial
Engineer in the making. And as what Albert Einstein said, Learning is an experience.
Everything else is just information.
