CHAPTER 1: California Dreaming


Lenny Samuel, a private investigator, had an expensive vacation in Hawaii three
weeks ago. He had borrowed $1000 for his holidays from Herman, a bodyguard.
For that reason, he needs money but there was no work for him these days.
Suddenly, a twenty-five year old lady comes to his office. She wants him to go
looking for The Chief (her horse).

CHAPTER 2: Sandy Bonner


Sandy Bonner says she has a horse called The Chief. Yesterday morning at 10
am a man, Dick Gates, has borrowed it to ride the horse for an hour but he did
not return. Two hours later, Sandy was called by another man who told her that
would bring the horse back in a few days. However, the man warned her that she
must not call the police. The lady describes Mr. Gates as a 40 year-old, tall and
heavy man, he has a long red hair in a ponytail, blue jeans and brown jacket.
Sandy says Samuel she is going to pay $200 per day for find The Chief.

CHAPTER 3: The Ride-A-Winner Ranch


Mr. Samuel follows Sandy Bonner to Ride-A-Winner Ranch, although she said
he had not. Sandy parks her small black 4x4 car near some buildings and after
some minutes the big red 4x4 car stops next to Sandys car. Mr. Samuel hides in
the bushes and he uses the binoculars. He sees Sandy talking to Dig Gates and
then she hits the man. At that moment Mr. Samuel is discovered by Lou Weaver,
Sandys handyman. He points a rifle at him. So he goes out the ranch.

CHAPTER 4: Santa Rosita Racetrack


Lenny Samuel wants to know about horse racing so he decides to go to Santa
Rosita Racetrack. It is a small and beautiful racetrack. Mr. Samuel gets into one
of the stable but he is stopped by a security guard. Coincidentally this is an old
friend, Slim Peters, with whom he had worked to the L.A police. Slim gives him a
yellow card and tells him more about horse racing, safety and horse breeding.

CHAPTER 5: The Red 4x4


Mr. Samuel walks along the roads between the stables and looks the red 4x4
with a trailer near the Stable 14. There were two people in the car. When the car
left the stables area, Mr. Samuel uses his special keys and opens the stables
door. He hides under the straw but when he goes out the stable and he is going
to lock the door, somebody hits him on his head very hard. Mr. Gates and another
man beat and leave him unconscious.

CHAPTER 6: Back to L.A.


Lenny Samuel is awakened by Mr. Slim who helps him and asks what happened.
Mr. Samuel tells him all but as his story does not believe, Mr. Slim took him to his
office. In an oversight, Mr. Samuel leaves the yellow card and takes a blue card
from Mr. Slims desk. As soon as possible Mr. Samuel walks to the car park and
goes to his office where he falls asleep.

CHAPTER 7: Sandy Again


Sandy Bonner visits Mr. Samuel again. She tells him that she does not want him
to do any more work for her because he made a mistake when he followed her.
Mr. Samuel put $50 in his pocket and $150 in an envelope and pushes it under
Hermans door. He also takes his gun. Two hours later, Sandy calls and the only
thing she says is Golden Dragon. Then he goes to Santa Rosita Racetrack
again.

CHAPTER 8: Golden Dragon


He arrives Santa Rosita Racetrack and pays $20 for his racetrack ticket and $10
for the car-park ticket. Then he goes to the betting office and meets Herman. He
wants his money - $850. Mr. Samuel promises Herman to pay him after the race.
He bets $20 on Golden Dragon horse. Herman says that Margarita horse is going
to be the winner. In the crowd, Mr. Samuel can see Mr. Gates.

CHAPTER 9: The Race


Golden Dragon, the horse that Mr. Samuel gambled, wins the race. Mr. Samuel
gives Herman $850 and says good bye to him. Mr. Samuel is curious and goes
to stable 14 again. He sees two men driving away the red 4x4. He gets into the
stable and the servant of Sandy, Lou Weaver is also there. She presses a button
by mistake and discovers a secret room.

CHAPTER 10: The Chief


Behind the secret door Mr. Samuel sees Lou Weaver. Lou says that The Chief
horse is at the stall. The Chief was brought by Gates and Ventanas yesterday,
said Lou, so I am going to care of it. Then Lou reveals Mr. Samuel that The Chief
and Golden Dragon are very similar so the men exchanged the horses for the
race. Suddenly the two men arrive and have a fierce argument with Lou. Lou tries
to shot Gates but sadly Ventanas shots Lou and he is badly hurt. After this, they
go out.

CHAPTER 11: L.A. Winners


Mr. Samuel helps Lou and escapes riding the horse. In his way he asks Slim call
the doctor. The two men are on their way to murder Sandy Bonner. Mr. Samuel
arrives just in time to help Sandy. The Chief jumps at Mr. Gates and causes the
man goes off his gun and Ventanas gets hurt. Mr. Samuel tied the criminals and
takes Ventanas mobile phone to call the police. Sandy thanks Mr. Samuel for
save her but Mr. Samuel explains that The Chief is the hero.

Characters:

- Lenny Samuel: He is a private investigator.


- Sandy Bonner: She lives in The Ride-A-Winner Ranch with his horse. She
is about twenty five years old and she has long dark hair. She has a lovely
face.
- The Chief: It is a racehorse. He is fast, big and beautiful. He is twelve years
old and two meters high. He has brown hair and brown eyes

2) Who are the minor characters? What is their function? Explain who they
are.

- Herman: He is a bodyguard. He is very tall more than two metres. He weighs


one hundred and forty kilos. He has white teeth. He is big and strong.
- Slim Peters: He was fat. Slim and Lenny had been L.A. policemen. He is a
security guard.
- Low Weaver: He is an old man. He worked for Miss Bonners family for more
than thirty years. He is an honest and faithful man.
- Dick gates: He was about forty years old, he was tall and heavy. He had long
red hair, tied in a pony- tail. He is a criminal.
- Ventanas: He was about thirty. He is a thin dark man. He had dark hair. He
is a criminal, too.
- Golden Dragon: He is a racehorse and hes the slowest horse in the race so
hes never won a race. He is similar to The Chief, he is a big brown horse.
- Margarita: She is a racehorse. She won her last two races.

- Sandy Bonner is a rich and educated girl.


- Lenny Samuel is a poor and educated investigator.
- Dig Gates and Ventanas are rich and jerk. They are criminals so they obtain
their money in a bad way.
- Slim is a good and poor person.
- Herman is a poor and a rude man.
- Low Weaver is a poor and educated man.
4) Is there a hero/ heroine? If yes, what is his/ her purpose? His/ her role? How
do you know he/ she is a hero or heroine?

- Yes, there is. His purpose is to find The Chief the racehorse.
- He is a private detective.
- He is a hero because he finds The Chief and he prevents that The Chief
dies for who were stolen. Apart of this, he saves Sandy.

5) Describe your favorite character in no less than 50 words. Use your


imagination.

My favorite character is The Chief. He is one of the best racehorses. He has


retired from racing. He is twelve years old and two metres high. He has brown
hair and brown eyes. He is a fast and brave animal. He loves her owner Sandy
Bonner and Lou Weaver. He is also a very intelligent animal because he helped
Lenny Samuel to save Sandy from the bad men.

I also like the main character Lenny Samuel because he was brave and smart.
He succeeds to ride a horse on his first time without any help.

Content:
1) What is the theme/ purpose of the story?

- The theme of the history is to find The Chief. The message of the story is to
gain money is not necessary to lie or injure other people. You can be honest
and hardworking and obtain the money that you need.

2) Does the author use description, dialogues, punctuation, slang or idioms?

- Yes, he does. He uses description when he mentions some characteristics of


each character. He uses punctuation rules in all the play.

3) Did the story develop and end according to your earlier expectations?

- Yes, I did because The Chief was find, Sandy was safe and Lenny got his
money so it had a happy ending. However I thought Sandy Bonner and Lenny
Samuel would fall in love.
