Culminating Focus Questions:

What is a noun?
What is an adjective?
When do we separate adjectives with commas?
How do we take out the word and and replace it with a comma?

Key Points Daily Assessment:

Why:
Students need to understand how to
correctly write using adjectives. For the
upcoming narrative writing project, the
students will need to be able to use
sensory detail and imagery. This will
require adjectives.

To keep their writing organized,

students need to know how and when to
use commas adjectives.

How:
Students should understand what nouns
and adjectives are prior to this lesson.
This lesson will focus on recognizing
when to use a comma and how to write
sentences using commas.

BEFORE (5 min.)

Before starting the Part 2 of the adjectives notes, I will review with the students what a noun
and adjective is.

To aid my students visually, I have created posters over adjectives and placed them in the
classroom. I will go over this poster with my students as we are reviewing the prior
knowledge content.

They were also given worksheets to do the day before, and I will have looked at those the
night before to determine their proficiency in identifying adjectives in sentences. These
worksheets will allow me to see where the students are struggling with in identifying
adjectives in sentences. It is important for students to be able to identify adjectives before
they can use commas to separate adjectives.

DURING (20 min.)

We will work through the Part 2 of the notes as a class. The students will have their handouts
to use as we are taking notes. The notes will consist of an overview of how to use commas,
sentence examples, and modeling and practice sessions.

As the students are taking notes, I will be walking around ensuring the students are on-task
and getting down the right information. Throughout each slide, I will conduct checks for
understanding to determine whether we are able to move on to the next slide or not.

During the I do section, I will make sure the students are writing down what I am writing
down, and I will be doing a think-aloud to model the cognitive process of this skill.

For the We do section, I will have a student tell me what to do. Again, when the student is
telling me to write, I will remind the students that they should be writing everything I am
writing.
The You do section will be an independent practice for the students. I will give them one
minute to do the last section, and I will go around to each student and check to see their work.

AFTER (25 min.)

To finish up the lesson and to provide formative assessment, the students will be working on
and completing a worksheet.

This worksheet will require the students to exchange the word and for commas and vice
versa. This is meant to allow the students to see the relationship between the two components.

Another portion of this worksheet has the students writing their own sentences using commas
to separate adjectives. This is the portion I assume the students will struggle with the most
because it is a higher level of thinking. The students also struggle with writing, so I will be
sure to have them go back and references their notes for sentence examples and to adapt from
those.

This worksheet will serve as the formative assessment for me leading up to their summative
over adjectives. This worksheet is also expected to overflow into the next day where they will
have additional time to work on it and review their sentences with me.
