1. a) i) Illustrate and define the following. [3]
A. Absolute Bandwidth
B. Null to Null bandwidth
C. Half-power Bandwidth
ii) Encode the following sequence and find the efficiency for the same using Shannon- [7]
Fano code.

1. b) The signal x(t) = 6 sin(2t) is transmitted using 4-bit binary PCM system. The quantizer [10]
is of the midtread type, with a step size of 1 volt. Sketch the resulting PCM wave for one
complete cycle of the input. Assume a sampling rate of four samples per second, with
samples taken at t= 1/8, 3/8, 5/8... Seconds.

2. a) For a delta modulation system, under the assumption of no slope overload distortion, [7]
determines the expression for maximum output signal to noise ratio. Assume the use
of sinusoidal input signal.

b) A PCM system uses a uniform quantizer followed by a 7- bit binary encoder. The bit [4]
rate of the system is equal to 50 Mbps.
i) What is the maximum message bandwidth for which the system operates
satisfactorily?
ii) Determine the output signal- to- quantizing noise ratio when a full- load
sinusoidal modulating wave of frequency 1 MHz is applied to the input.

3. Explain the working of DPCM transmitter and receiver with neat block diagram. [6]

4. A binary data is represented as a line coded waveform as given below. Derive the [8]
power spectral density for the waveform.

5. a) Draw the block diagram of a matched filter and derive an expression for impulse [10]
response of the same.
b) How is eye pattern generated? How can it be used to analyze the effect of ISI? [4]
6. Determine the message points with the associated signal vectors for continuous phase [10]
frequency shift keying (CPFSK) and draw the signal space diagram for the same. Find
the Probability of error.
7. a) Determine the message points associated with band pass ON- OFF keying system and [10]
draw the signal space diagram. Also derive its probability of symbol error.

7. b) i) Explain the Tranciver structure of MSK system. [4]
ii) Explain the phase trellis diagram of MSK with suitable example and also compute [6]
the message points for its signal space diagram.
8. A band pass data transmission scheme uses antipodal signals S1(t) =A cos (wct) [7]
and S2 (t) = -A cos(wct) for transmitting 1 and 0 respectively. Binary data is
transmitted at the rate of 10 kbps. During the course of transmission white Gaussian
noise of zero mean and power spectral density 10-9 W/Hz is added to the signal .The
amplitude of the received sinusoidal wave for digit 1 or 0 is 10 mV.
a) Find the average probability of symbol error.
b) If the bit rate is increased to 10 Mbps, what value of amplitude of the received
sinusoidal wave is needed to attain the same value of Pe as in part (a)?
9. Draw the block schematic and construct the PN sequence for the feedback Taps [12]
[5, 4, 2, 1]. Verify Run and balance property.
10. Illustrate the variation of the frequency of a fast FH/MFSK signal with time for one [8]
complete period of the PN sequence. The period of the PN sequence is 15.Input data
sequence is 01111110001001111010. FH/MFSK signal has the following parameters.
Number of bits per MFSK Symbol= 2
Number of MFSK tones= 4
Length of PN segment per hop = 3
Total number of frequency hops= 8
11. Illustrate with an example, a technique used to generate Orthogonal codes of length 8 in [4]
a CDMA system.
