Panama Congress.
The World Missionary conference, that met
in Edinburgh in 1910 appointed a
continuation committee that was intended to
push forward the work for which the
conference was called, viz, propagation of
missions in all lands. Its first act was the rigid
exclusion of missions to Roman Catholic
countries, including even the dark continent
of South America, which includes Mexico
and Central America. We understand the
eight commissioners of continuation
committee and all the sub-conferences held
or called by them have strictly followed this
rule. At a meeting of this committee in
London some two years ago Rev. G.
Campbell Morgan reports that it declared
work in Roman Catholic countries outside of
its sphere. The committee having asked the
Evangelical Union of South America to
supply information of problems of
missionary work there, when the same was
supplied, replied, "We deal only with work
among non-Christians. Let us know if you
are facing problems of work among the
Indian tribes not yet Christianized, or
whether they are dealing with problems
raised by the condition of Latin Christianity.
If the former, we shall specially welcome
contributions from them for our papers, if
the latter, their work is outside our sphere."
Dr. Morgan says, ''If South America is
outside their sphere, are not some of us
outside their sphere also. I see in this a
serious menace, a compromise with the spirit
of Rome, which will react upon our country,
and upon missionary work everywhere."

La Conferencia Misionera Mundial, que se
reuni en Edimburgo en 1910 nombr un
Comit de continuacin que tena la intencin
de impulsar el trabajo para el que la
Conferencia se llamaba, a saber, la propagacin
de las misiones en todas las tierras. Su primer
acto fue la rgida exclusin de misiones a los
pases Catlicos romanos, incluyendo incluso
el continente oscuro de Sudamrica, que
incluye a Mxico y Centroamrica.
Entendemos que los ocho comisionados del
Comit de continuacin y todas las sub-
conferencias celebradas o convocadas por
ellos han seguido estrictamente esta regla. En
una reunin de este Comit en Londres hace
unos dos aos, el Reverendo Campbell
Morgan informa que declar su trabajo en los

nuestros papeles, si este ltimo, su trabajo est
fuera de nuestra esfera. El Dr. Morgan dice,
Si Sudamrica est fuera de su esfera, no
somos algunos de nosotros fuera de su esfera
tambin. Veo en esto una grave amenaza, un
compromiso con el espritu de Roma, que
reaccionar sobre nuestro pas, y sobre el
trabajo misionero en todas partes.
Now this continuation committee has called
some sort of a missionary congress in
Panama for February next year, and another
in Guatemala City. Our Secretary, Dr. C. I.
Scofield has been appointed as a member of
the local committee, without knowing that it
meant affiliation with Rome, as all
documents now clearly indicate. A letter just
at hand from Dr. Scofield on a sick bed, says
he has resigned from the committee and will
have nothing to do with the affair. Since our
older missionaries on this field have learned
of the sphere of this Panama and Guatemala
congress, they have utterly repudiated the
whole thing and the others will doubtless
follow when they know the facts. We
understand all the other evangelical
missionaries in Central America have done
the same thing and doubtless all such in
South America will do likewise. How can we
do any other way when we know from actual
contact that Rome is an inveterate, never
ending and most bitter enemy of the Gospel
of Christ. Where she has invaded the ranks
of the poor Indians with her gross
superstitions as she has in most cases in
Central America, she has made them tenfold
more the children of the devil than those she
has never reached. Our Bro. A. E. Bishop,
who will soon pass his 20th years work as a
missionary in Central America, said here a
few years ago, that the people in Central
America to whom he has been preaching,
most of them devout Roman Catholics,
knew no more about the free gift of salvation
through the blood of Christ than the
heathens of Africa, India or China. He said
all the converts, many of whom are now
preaching the gospel of free grace, testified
that they were in utter darkness and
ignorance of the way of life, till they heard it
from a Protestant Missionary.
Ahora este Comit de continuacin ha llamado
a algn tipo de Congreso misionero en Panam
para febrero del prximo ao, y otro en la
ciudad de Guatemala. Nuestro Secretario, el
Dr. C. I. Scofield ha sido nombrado miembro
del Comit local, sin saber que significaba
afiliacin con Roma, ya que todos los
documentos ahora indican claramente. Una
carta a mano del Dr. Scofield en una cama
enferma, dice que ha renunciado al Comit y
que no tendr nada que ver con el asunto.
Desde que nuestros antiguos misioneros en
este campo han aprendido de la esfera de este
Congreso de Panam y Guatemala, ellos han
repudiado completamente todo el asunto y los
otros sin duda seguirn cuando sepan los
hechos. Entendemos que todos los otros
misioneros evanglicos en Centroamrica han
hecho lo mismo y, sin duda, todo eso en
Sudamrica har lo mismo. Cmo podemos
hacer cualquier otra manera cuando sabemos
de contacto real que Roma es un enemigo
empedernido, interminable y ms amargo del
Evangelio de Cristo. Donde ella ha invadido
las filas de los indios pobres con sus
supersticiones gruesas como ella tiene en la
mayora de los casos en Centroamrica, ella los
ha hecho diez veces ms los hijos del diablo
que los que ella nunca ha alcanzado. Nuestro
hermano. A. E. Obispo, que pronto pasar su
trabajo de 20 aos como misionero en
Centroamrica, dijo aqu hace unos aos, que
la gente en Centroamrica a quien ha estado
predicando, la mayora de ellos devotos
catlicos romanos, no saba nada ms sobre el
regalo libre de la salvacin a travs de la sangre
de Cristo que los paganos de frica, de la India
o de China. Dijo que todos los conversos,
muchos de los cuales ahora predican el
Evangelio de la gracia libre, testificaron que
estaban en la oscuridad absoluta y la ignorancia
del modo de vida, hasta que lo oyeron de un
misionero protestante.
If any one even doubts this, we beg him to
write to any missionary or native helper. We
have not a missionary that has not been
bitterly persecuted and many of them stoned
and the native stoned, and many of them
imprisoned and some even killed by the
instigation of the priests of Rome, and they
hate us worse than satan and teach their
people to do the same. And yet work like this
is outside the sphere of this Continuation
committee, and of the Panama Conference.
Now if this is so, how can we have
fellowship with such unfruitful works of
darkness "And I heard another voice from
heaven saying. Come out of her my people,
that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that
ye receive not her plagues. For her sins have
reached unto heaven, and God hath
remembered her iniquities.

tenemos un misionero que no haya sido
perseguido amargamente y muchos de ellos
apedreados y el nativo apedreado, y muchos de
ellos encarcelados y algunos incluso asesinados
por la instigacin de los sacerdotes de Roma, y
ellos nos odian peor que Satans y ensean a
su pueblo a hacer lo mismo. Y sin embargo, el
trabajo como este est fuera de la esfera de este
Comit de continuacin, y de la Conferencia
de Panam. Ahora bien, si esto es as, cmo
podemos tener compaerismo con obras tan
infructuosas de la oscuridad? y escuch otra
voz del cielo diciendo. Salgan de ella mi
pueblo, para que no seis partcipes de sus
pecados, y que no recibiris sus plagas. Porque
sus pecados han llegado al cielo, y Dios ha
recordado sus iniquidades.
