Cardiovascular system

By: Mary Fairbanks and Francis Mismash

Function
Organs in the cardiovascular system (in mammals):

Heart- Controls movement of the blood by acting as a pump.

Blood- Maintains blood pressure and regulates body temperature by carrying
all the cells and nutrients throughout the body.
Blood vessels- Transports blood throughout body.
Arteries- Carries blood away from the heart.
Veins- Brings blood back to the heart.
Capillaries- Carries blood away from body and exchange nutrients with
tissues at a cellular level.
Function
Organs in the circulatory (in plants):

Xylem- Moves water and solutes from the roots to the leaves.
Phloem- Transports sugars and other molecules made by the plant.
Tissues

Connective tissue- Supports, protects, and binds other tissues together.

Epithelial tissue- Continually dividing for replacements of old, worn,
or damaged cells.
Muscular tissue- uses energy to contract and create a pulling force.
Cardiac- Found in heart and beats without getting tired.
Skeletal- Attached to bones.
Smooth- Found in the wall of hollow organs such as the stomach.
Structure Relates to Function
The heart is divided into two sides. The right side creates a circuit to and from
the lungs. The left side creates a circuit to and from the rest of the body.
The left side of the heart is more muscular than the right side so it can pump to the rest of the
body whereas the right side has to pump to the lungs.
Arteries are thicker than veins
Arteries have a lot more pressure being placed on therm.
Veins are thinner because they don't have any muscle, instead they use skeletal
muscles and valves to return blood to the heart. Another reason veins are thinner is
because they are under less pressure.
How the Cardiovascular System Maintains
Homeostasis
The cardiovascular system helps maintain homeostasis by circulating oxygen rich
blood through the body. Without this blood the body would not get any nutrients or
oxygen. The body cannot live without either of these things.
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES
VALVE REPLACEMENTS
BOVINE
PORCINE
MECHANICAL
STENTS
Placed after heart attack
Used to hold clogged arteries open, and not blocked.
Heart transplants
TAH(total artificial heart)
Bridges time for patients between a live tissue transplant
Can permanently replace heart if transplant is not an option
Live tissue transplant
