Lets explore Beach City!
1. There are 150 watermelons on an island. They increase at the rate of
12% every month. How many months will it take for 15000 watermelons
to grow?

Solution:

150 x 1.12x = 150000

150 150
x
1.12 = 100
x = log100
log1.12
x 40.64

It will take 40.64 months to grow 15000 watermelons on the island.

2. Because of restaurant wars, the Frymans 10000 fries sale is

decreasing at a rate of 30% per year. I In how many years will the
business only be able to sell 500 fries?

Solution:

10000 x 0.70x = 500

10000 10000
x
0.70 = 0.05
x = log(0.05)
log(0.70)
x 8.39
It will take 8.39 years for the business to sell only 500 fries.

3. Sadie deposits P4000 into her account paying 3% annual interest compounded
monthly. How long until there is P9000 in the account?

Solution:

9000 = 4000 x (1+ 0.03)12t

12
9000 = 4000 x (1.0025)12t
4000 4000
2.25 = 1.002512t
log 2.25 = log 1.002512t
log 2.25 = 12t x log 1.0025
log 2.25 = 12t
log 1.0025
324.777. = 12t
t 27.1
It will take 27.1 months for Sadies account to reach P9000.
4. The Geode caused an earthquake throughout the
planet. In Beach city, it registered 7.6 on the Richter
scale. Later an earthquake in Empire City is three times
stronger. What is the magnitude of the earthquake in
Empire City?

Solution:

let MBC = magnitude of Beach City

MEC = magnitude of Empire City

MBC = log(IBC)=7.6
S
7.6 = log(IBC)
S
MEC = log(IEC)
S
IEC = 3(IBC)

MEC = log3(IBC)
S
= log3(IBC) -logS

= log3 + (log(IBC) -logS)

= log3 + log(IBC)
S
= log3 + 7.6
= 0.5 + 7.6
= 8.1

The magnitude of Empire City is 8.1

5. The Drill has been tested and created 120 Db. How many times is it as
loud as Stevens cellphone ringtone that produces 100 Db?

Solution:

let Db1 = decibels produced by the Drill

Db2 = decibels produced by Stevens cellphone ringtone

I1 = Db1 - Db2
I2 10
I1 = 120-100
I2 10
2
= 10
= 100

The Drill makes a sound 100 Db as loud as Stevens cellphone ringtone.

6. Connie was doing PH level testing on soil, with Homeworld resulting 5.
How much more acidic is Beach City (4.2) compared to Homeworld?

Solution:
let pHBC = PH level of Beach City
pHHW = PH level of Homeworld

[H+]BC = 10pHbc-pHhw
[H+]HW
= 104.2-5
= 0.15848931924611
0.16

Beach City soil is 0.16 more acidic than Homeworld soil.

7. What is the sound level in Decibels of Lions roar which is as loud as a

normal conversation

(I=3x10-6 w/m2)?

Solution:

B = 10 (logI +12)
= 10 (log(3x10-6)+12)
64.7712155
The sound level of Lions roar is 64.77 w/m2.

8. On the 1st year, the Donut shop sold 2000 dounts. If the donuts sales are
increasing at 40% annually, how many years until the shop sells 50000 donuts?

Solution:

2000 x 1.4x = 50000

2000 2000
x
1.4 = 25
x = log 25
log 1.4
x 9.57

It would take 9.57 years for the Donut shop to sell 50000 donuts.
9. Martys management campaign earned him P15500 on his first year. After
Sour Cream met him, his income has had a 50% decrease every year. How
many years does Marty have until his money is P50?

Solution:

15500 x 0.50x = 50
15500 15500
0.50x = 0.003
x = log 0.003
log 0.50
x = 5.06
Marty has 5.06 years until he can only earn P50.

10. Lars puts P6000 in his account which has 4% interest rate compounded
quarterly. How long until his money reaches P10000?

Solution:

10000 = 6000 x (1 + 0.04)4t

4
4t
10000 = 6000 (1.01)
6000 6000
1.7 = 1.014t
log 1.7 = log 1.014t
log 1.7 = 4t (log 1.01)
log 1.7 = 4t
log 1.01
53. 33 = 4t
4 4
t = 13.33
It will take Lars 13.33 quarters to reach P10000.
