TITLE IX

OCTOBER 23, 2016

In the 1970s only a few girls participated in high school sports, now days there are a lot

of girls participating in sports. Sports take a huge toll in the American society today. Sports make

people set goals and try to achieve the dreams of becoming the athlete to talk about. The media

also takes a big toll on sports because the create publicity for these great athletes. Today the

media has given a lower profile on the women that play sports. When Americans think of

women playing sports, they think of ice skating, gymnastics, field hockey, swimming and diving,

and golfing. Americans dont think of women playing the more manly sports as they say like

football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. People dont realize that women have the potential to

play any sport that any man can play, they could even perform that sport equal or better than the

man.

A whole lot has changed for the women in the 1970s. One of the most important things

that has happened in the womens world of athletics is professional sports for women. They have

the opportunity to go to the next level out of college to go into professional sports, just like men

are able to. Women sports arent watched as much as they should be watch in the professional

level or the collegiate level. Americans watch more mens sports because they say that,

womens sports are boring and to slow. I dont think that they should be judged that way.

Women even get paid way less than men in the professional level, which should be balanced out

around the same amount or somewhere in the ball park range. I understand that people dont

watch or go to women games as much as they should, but you cant sit there and punish the

women for that because I bet if they could get a bigger audience to view their games they would.

People will always have their doubts about women in the field of sports and education, there is

always going to be people to judge them saying that, they shouldnt be able to do this or do

that.

In 1972 Title IX was passed and it states that, No person in the United States shall, on

the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to

discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Title IX applies to every single educational both private and public schools that receive federal

funds. All universities and privates colleges must abide by Title IX. Athletics are considered

educational programs and activities, they arent the specific goal for Title IX. The three major

parts of Title IX are participation the schools dont have to offer identical sports, but they have to

offer an equal opportunity, scholarships the schools have to give out an equal number of

scholarships to each gender if the total number of males get 126 scholarships, then they have to

give the females 126 scholarships, and Title IX also requires the same amount of treatment for

both genders if for example; if the mens have a 2600 square foot locker room then the girls have

to have a 2600 square foot locker room. If the mens locker rooms have three flat inch

televisions, twelve recliners, and sixteen lockers. Then so does the females locker room it all has

to be equal and the same amount.

Today more girls are interested in sports and recreational activities. College sports are

now in the vocabulary of many young inspiring females for post high school plans, college is just

in general. Now women are able to do so much more than just be a wife that stays at home with

the kids because of Title IX women are able to go to college and get an education, they are also

allowed to play many sports and not only that but they can also get a scholarship and go to

school for free even. If it is just an educational scholarship or a sports scholarship. They now

have the freedom to do what they want and go into any field that they want to do. As women get

more publicity they are much more greatly respected. They are role models for millions of little

girls and even little boys. Having so much more in this world women will continue to do great

2
things to inspire anyone and everyone who thinks that they cant do so. Women now have their

own support system, their own jobs, degrees, professional sports and so much more.

In conclusion I have talked to you how Title IX has impacted so many womens life. It

has changed the life of the mens also because not all men are having to go out every single day

and work themselves to death just to put food on the table. Women are now capable to go out

and get a job to help provide food and many other qualities that their families need. Title IX has

inspired millions of individuals in so any ways. Title IX has put a boost on our economies

growth in degrees. There are many female doctors, lawyers, and many other occupations.

Women have earned the right to be counted as equal in this society and I am glad that I am able

to hear about all the great changes that have been made over the years, even though 46 years

isnt a very long time just take a second and think about all the things that women could have

accomplished centuries ago. Besides everyone doubting them and degrading them.
