Let the Artist in You Shine!

1 Beginning Steps
1. Go to https://www.desmos.com/calculator and create a free account. This is necessary so
that you can save your work. Be sure your username and password is school appropriate,
and that you write it down so you don't forget it.

2. Use this link below if you have questions about how to create a particular graph.
a. https://desmos.s3.amazonaws.com/Desmos_User_Guide.pdf
HINT: Make sure that you read about sliders, they will help you quite a bit and can be
used with either variables in the function or in the domain limits.

3. To limit the domain of a function:

a. Type the function in, and then in curly brackets,{ type the limitation. } For
example if I want the quadratic parent function just between -2 and 2, I type:
{-2< x <2} You can also limit the range {3< y <7}.

4. To shade a graph replace the = sign with an inequality < or >, for example y > 2x+1

5. Look at your parent graph toolkit for ideas on what shape you need to make. Or go look
at a creative pick from the Desmos staff for ideas.

Heres an example to aspire to: www.desmos.com/calculator/tyayekvdof

2 Plan Your Art

1. Make sure that you READ THE RUBRIC so that you understand the
project requirements.
2. What, you say? You are not an artist? OK lets brainstorm. Maybe it is a logo for
your favorite school or team. Maybe it is a shield that represents who you are. Maybe
it is a simple rendition of a piece of famous art. Maybe it is a cartoon character that you
want to bring to life.
3. Come prepared on the first day with an idea of what you want to design and what types of
graphs will help you make it.

3 Create your Art on Desmos

4. Log in so that you will be able to save your work.
5. Note that you can vary the window if youd like
6. You can change the color of the lines you use. Click on the setting gear button. Hold your
cursor down on the color button next to the equation and a menu of colors will pop up.
You can change your line from solid to dotted, and change the color. You can also overlap
shaded areas to darken an area.
4 Submit your Work
When your artwork is complete, use the share your work icon in the top right corner of the
toolbar and email your graph to akimble@ioniaschools.org
You must submit your graph by 11:59 pm Monday October 30th.

5. Reflect on your work

Reflect on your work and type a response. This response does not need to be lengthy, but
you do need to completely satisfy each of the required pieces of information. Print your
reflection or email it to akimble@ioniaschools.org
Your reflection is due the same day as your graph, Monday October 30 th.

Include the following pieces of information;

a. Your name, date, class period

b. The Title of your picture
c. A list of how many of each type of function you used
d. Why you chose the topic of your art
e. What you found interesting about creating art on Desmos
f. What you found difficult in creating art on Desmos
g. How you would change this project for students next year
