Introduction

Oral Contraceptive Pill

There are many methods in family planning and oral contraceptive pill is one of

them. Oral contraceptive pill is taken orally to prevent the releasing of eggs from ovaries

every month. Without ovulation, the fertilization cannot occur, thus preventing

pregnancies (Milton, 2003). Apart from preventing pregnancies, many women also take

contraceptive pill for reasons like regulating menstruation cycle, treating acne or helping

pre-menopausal hot flashes.

The writer hopes that the readers of this research paper will have better

understanding on the usage of contraceptive pill from both modern and Islamic

perspectives since Islam does not oppose family planning. Allah Almighty has bestowed

reason upon man to enable him to distinguish between the useful and the harmful, and to

help him follow the path that would assure him happiness in this world as well as in the

world here after.

History of Oral Contraceptive Pill

Oral contraceptive pill has been the most effective and widely used forms of birth

control for over forty years. Oral contraceptive, or the ‘pill’, revolutionized birth control

in the 20th century by giving women the ultimate control over their fertility.

According to Ratman (1990), there are a lot of differences between recent oral

contraceptive pill than the old contraceptive (which were used in 60s and 70s). He

explained the history of oral contraceptive as follows:

Example of an Introduction

The combined oral contraceptive pill has proven to be popular in developed

countries with estimates of 120 million women on the pill worldwide. When used as

directed it is eminently effective contraceptive. The early combined OCs had a rather

high estrogen component, which was responsible for the thrombogenic effect. The dose

of estrogen has been progressively lowered till today when very low estrogen dose pills

are available. (p.106)

Ratnam (1990) also highlighted that the above findings in 1969 triggered two

developments, the replacement of the estrogen mestranol by ethiyl oestradiol and the

introduction of oral contraceptive containing smaller and smaller quantities of estrogens.

It cannot be denied then that contraceptive pill is the best family planning method

because it is effective, it improves women’s health and it is practical.
