especializacion completa.

Trade and Inequality, revisited

Trade and Inequality (cont.)
2. Fragmentation of Production
In the 1990s some thought that effects of trade on
inequality would hit a limit: at a certain point, advanced
economies would run out of labor-intensive industries to
lose (complete specialization).
But trade created new labor-intensive industries
through the fragmentation of production.
e.g., the manufacture of microprocessors is a highly
sensitive, skill-intensive process. But Intel has 2 stages
of production: the fabs, in high-wage advanced
countries, and the assembly, in China, Malaysia, and
the Philippines.
Outsourcing also adds to un-equalizing trade.

Trade and Inequality (cont.)
Conclusion:
Its no longer safe to assert, as a decade ago,
that the effects of trade on income distribution
in wealthy countries are fairly minor.
This doesnt mean to favor protectionism, just
that free-traders need better answers to
those who probably lose from globalization.
