Grade 9 Physical Education Unit Plan

University of Lethbridge
Professional Semester III
Matthew Gough (001127596)
Philosophy of Physical Education
Physical education should develop students who understand the value of
physical fitness in their lives. It must support all aspects of physical literacy that students
can carry forward into their everyday routine. Participation in class will allow students to
see the benefits of active living. It was help students focus better in other subject areas
as well. This includes basic skills, fitness, social understanding, cooperation, and
nutrition. As a physical education teacher, it is my responsibility to facilitate this learning
through a variety of activities and experiences.
My physical education classroom should be a safe environment in which the
students feel they can participate without fear of injury or embarrassment. Students
should see the benefits of physical education while still enjoying their time in class.
Within an effective physical education classroom students develop teamwork abilities,
cooperation, and social sensibilities that enables them to be successful inside and
outside the classroom. It is my job to enable my students to find success in this area.
One of the keys to enabling this type of environment is to display passion for an
active lifestyle and teach by example. I believe that all physical education teachers
should be willing and able to participate alongside their students. By doing this they are
better able to develop an encouraging classroom community and a supportive
relationship with their students.

Introduction to Unit
The main goal of this unit is to develop teamwork and cooperation through
participation in many different team sports. The main outcomes for the unit are A1010:
adapt and improve activity specific skills in a variety of games; and C105: develop and
apply practices that contribute to teamwork. By participating in each game, they will
demonstrate their physical skills as well as their teamwork. Each student will have an
opportunity to be a leader and a follower in a variety of activities. They will complete
daily reflections and self-assessment of their teamwork skills.
The assessments within the unit are based on the students actions during class,
as well as their ability to reflect on their personal growth and development. The activities
in the unit are aimed at allowing this evaluation to take place in many different
circumstances and situations, specifically by playing games with varying skills sets. The
students will work with the same team throughout the unit. Each day they will complete
against each of the other teams and their win-loss record will be recorded. At the end of
the unit the teams will be seeded based on their record and participate in a tournament
that incorporates each of the team sports played during the unit. The tournament will
help motivate the students and keep them engaged.
A unit like this is valuable because a strong classroom community where the
students can work with each other is helpful in a Phys. Ed class. By focusing on
cooperation and teamwork for a period of time the students would realize the
importance of incorporating these skills along with the physical skills that they develop.
Students come to physical education class expecting to learn to run, throw, or kick,
however; they do not necessarily expect to learn social skills. Implementing a unit where
this is a focus helps to draw the students attention to using and improving their skills.
Assessment Plan
The overall goal of this unit is to develop and assess teamwork in a variety of
team games. The activities in the unit scaffold the students development and allow
them to display teamwork and cooperation. The following grading breakdown allows for
fair assessment of each student.

1. Daily Self-Assessment of Teamwork Formative

2. Daily Participation Checklist /10 20%
3. Culminating Leadership Rubric /20 20%
4. Culminating Teamwork Rubric /12 20%
5. Personal Unit Reflection /20 40%

1. Daily Self-Assessment of Teamwork

On the gym wall beside the door there will be three pieces of poster board: red,
yellow, and green. Above the board are the practices that contribute to
teamwork that the class came up with in the first lesson. Each students name is
attached to the board with sticky tack. When they exit, each student will move
their name to the color that represents their progress.
2. Daily Participation Checklist
Each day the students will be assessed based on the two primary outcomes for
the unit A910: adapt and improve activity specific skills in a variety of games;
and C95: develop and apply practices that contribute to teamwork. They will be
awarded a score from 1-4 for each skill or characteristic. The skills will be based
on the daily activities and the characteristics will be derived from the initial
discussion with the students. Their daily totals will be combined to make an
overall percentage.
3. Culminating Leadership Rubric
At some point in the unit each student will lead their teammates in an activity
specific warm up. Their warm up should engage and motivate their teammates.
They will be scored based on the rubric.
4. Culminating Teamwork Rubric
Throughout the unit each students teamwork will be observed and recorded
using the daily checklist, self-assessments, and anecdotal notes. Using these
observations, the teacher will use the rubric to score the students teamwork
development.
5. Personal Unit Reflection
At the end of the unit each student will write a personal reflection discussing their
experiences. In 1-2 pages they should address the following questions: How can
you be a good teammate? How can these teamwork skills transfer to your daily
life? What did you learn from working with a team? What characteristics do you
value in your teammates? What characteristics do you value in a good leader?
