Ms. Madeleine Hillyer

Industrial Organizational Psychologist

Dear Hiring Manager,

While researching upstanding and budding companies in the field of applied science and
technology development I arrived at an online application for the position of Human Factors
Researcher, and I would like to arrange a meeting to speak about this job opportunity. The values
of your non-profit, including your investment in local communities, align with what I try to
strive for in my professional and personal life. Over the years Battelle has developed an
incredible rapport between staff and with clients, both government and industry organizations. I
believe my skills in human factors research and development can allow further refinement within
these relationships. As your company is planning to add over fifty employees to various teams
this year, my continued education in assessing workmanship, cooperation, and other much
needed skills will be utilized on a day to day basis.

Through further research it became obvious that since your companys inception it has
delivered on its promise to provide when others cant. In 1943 Battelle fabricated the then almost
unknown metal uranium as part of the Manhattan Project to develop the first nuclear weapons,
today Battelle continues to innovate. My work would strengthen communication within teams
and between teams of researchers and insure happier, healthier, and more productive employees.
I will graduate May 14th with a masters degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology from
Arizona State University; because two of my focuses throughout the graduate program have been
hiring for enduring innovation and team-building I believe my knowledge base matches the
position. During my second year of the three-year masters program I led workshops for our
local Maricopa Credit Union in team-building, long-term problem resolution, and hiring. Staying
in contact with management of the Maricopa Credit Unions has allowed me to see the fruits of
my time there. While client relationships are unwavering, my research and counsel can be used
to improve interactions on the most basic level.

The application for this career states that a human factors researcher would be need to be
proficient in statistical analysis using standard social sciences statistical packages. I am
experienced in SAS and other statistical analysis procedures. During my project with my local
Maricopa Credit Union I uses SAS to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of each entry level
worker, I then uses my skills to analyze why one employee might be more effective than another,
I took into account the amount of time they spent on non-work related tasks, the amount of time
they spent sitting as opposed to standing or walking around. I then asked workers to rate
themselves and comment on these areas of their work life and other areas. Because I am trained
in hiring, team-building, and bringing mission statements to life these are things I am aware of
every day in my own work. When I am in a leadership position I consider myself an important
part of a team but no more important than any other team member; I try to keep in mind the
scenario described in the book Rookie Smarts, many times a rookie will bring the best ideas to
the table because they are not yet conditioned to think in one way over and over this is what we
should all strive for in all positions.

Battelle is a rapidly growing company that delivers where others have not and that has
potential to become a household name in outstanding non-profits, and I would love to discuss
how my training can help strengthen client and inter-employee relations. I will be calling your
office Monday, October 23rd, if you have any questions please call me at (360) 678-6864 or
email me at MadeleineJoy@IndustrialPsychologist.com. God bless you and the Battelle family.
Thank you for your time in reading my letter and rsum.

Sincerely,

Madeleine Hillyer
