NOTES ON EXER 3

Part 1. The Ovicidal/Larvicidal (OL) trap is a tool which aims to reduce the population of dengue
mosquitoes. With the nationwide distribution of OL traps, the DOH reported that the highest
reduction of dengue cases occurred in Visayas and Mindanao regions. However, the installation
of OL traps in households from selected barangays in Metro Manila only had a little effect. Thus,
the department plans to distribute more OL traps in this region. Table 1 shows the number of OL
traps distributed in selected barangays in Metro Manila during the first quarter of 2013.

Complete the report by filling-in the blanks with the most appropriate summary statistics.

Statisticians Report
For the number of OL traps, the highest and lowest numbers of OL traps among the six
barangays in Metro Manila are _____ and _____, respectively. Moreover, the most frequent
number of OL traps has a value equal to _____. The number of OL traps tends to cluster to a
value equal to _____. As a measure of dispersion, the variance is equal to _____. This value of the
variance indicates that the number of OL traps deviates from _____ by _____, on the average. In
addition, the distribution of the number of OL traps is _____ which means that there are _____
numbers of OL traps with high values.

Part 2. Using the data set below on the time on task of 25 factory workers under a 5-minute time
constraint, compute for the numerical descriptive measures being asked for. Write your own
interpretations of the computed numerical descriptive measures.

e. Factory workers who finished the task faster than 200 seconds were given with incentives.
How many percent of the workers were given with incentive?

PART 1:

Statisticians Report

For the number of OL traps, the highest and lowest numbers of OL traps among the six
barangays in Metro Manila are 146 and 65, respectively. Moreover, the most frequent number of
OL traps has a value equal to 90. The number of OL traps tends to cluster to a value equal to 96.
As a measure of dispersion, the variance is equal to 834. This value of the variance indicates that
the number of OL traps deviates from 96 by 28.88, on the average. In addition, the distribution of
the number of OL traps is positively skewed which means that there are few numbers of OL traps
with high values.

PART 2:

Possible Interpretation

Twenty-five factory workers were a given a task to be completed within 5 minutes. Among them,
the fastest worker completed the task in 151 seconds then after almost 2 minutes (114 seconds)
the slowest worker completed it in 265 seconds. Recorded times averaged to 204.36 seconds
which is fairly slower than 3 minutes. Moreover, 50 percent of the workers completed the task
slower than 196 seconds. Considering the 200-second mark, 52 percent (13 workers) will receive
incentives.
