provided with a splice at a section where the factored shear and bending moment to be
resisted by the web are V=1000 kN and M=350 kNm. The flange plate thickness = 50
mm each. Design a web splice.

(b) The tie member of a truss is made of ISA 65X65X6 and is subjected to a factored
tension load of 90 kN. The length of the angle is not enough to go from end to end
and hence a splice has to be provided. Design a groove welded joint.

Q.6 A rectangular beam is to be simply supported on two walls of 125 mm width with a clear
span of 6 m. The characteristic live load is 12 kN/m, M20 grade concrete and Fe 415
steel. What is the effective span of the beam? Design a suitable section for the beam and
determine the necessary tension steel.

Q.7 Design a simply supported RCC slab for a roof of a hall 4 m X 10 m with 230 mm walls
all around. Assume a live load of 4 kN/m 2 and finish 1 kN/m2. Use M25 grade concrete
and Fe 415 steel.

Q.8 A column 300 X 400 mm has an unsupported length of 3 m and effective length of 3.6 m.
If it is subjected to ultimate load of 1100 kN and ultimate moment of resistance of 230
kNm about the major axis, determine the longitudinal steel using M25 mix and Fe 415
grade steel. Assume effective cover of 60mm.

Q.9 Determine the dimensions of a T-shaped retaining wall for a height of 4 m above the
ground level. The top of the earth retained is surcharged at 20 o with the horizontal. The
angle of repose of the earth is 35o and its density is 19 kN/m3. The safe bearing capacity
of the soil is 80 kN/m2 and coefficient of friction between concrete and soil is 0.55.

Q.10 Design a square spread footing to carry a column load of 1000 kN from a 40 cm square
tied column containing 20 mm bars as the longitudinal steel. The bearing capacity of soil
is 120 kN/m2. Consider base of footing at 1 m below the ground level. The unit weight of
earth is 20 kN/m3. Use M15 mix and Fe 415 grade steel.

Q.11 A flat roof building of 18 m span has 1.5 m deep trusses at 5 m centres. The total dead
