Colorado Recreation Project Based Learning Unit

Project Idea: Illustrate outdoor recreation activities that support the economy from
different regions in Colorado. Research the data and create an infographic illustrating
types of outdoor recreation in each region. Infographics will be shared classwide to
show the different areas of tourism and outdoor recreation for each region.

Content Standard:
Colorado 3rd Grade Social Studies
Geography Concept 2- The concept of regions is developed through an understanding
of similarities and differences in places
Student Outcome:
a. Observe and describe the physical characteristics and the cultural and human
features of a region (DOK 1-2)
b. Identify the factors that make a region unique including cultural diversity, industry and
agriculture, and land forms (DOK 1-2)

ISTE Standard for Students:


1. Creativity and innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct
knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities

Objective for lesson


Students will recognize the diverse geographic areas in Colorado and how the
geography supports the local economy with outdoor recreation activities. Students will
select one region to research the outdoor activities and tourism in that region that
supports the local economy. This information will be transferred into an infographic that
illustrates this information.

Tool(s):
Smartboard
Easel.ly account (infographic creating website)
Class set of Chromebooks or Ipads
Printed off examples of Infographics
Variety of tourist brochures, recreation books, and regions/geography books
about Colorado;
Colorado Recreation WebQuest
Preparation:
Previous lesson/knowledge concerning the economy.
Previous lesson/knowledge of citing sources.
Students in groups of 2.

Teacher Directed Activities:


Day One:
On the Smartboard have the Colorado Recreation WebQuest loaded.
Start by explaining that the the class will be spending the next 3 days
researching recreation activities to create an infographic illustrating their
information.
Have a variety of infographics printed off and pass out to the students.
Ask the students to take a couple of minutes in groups at their tables to discuss
what they think an infographic is and why we would use them.
Have a brief class discussion on the students opinions on infographics and give a
basic explanation of infographics. Tell the students to keep in mind that they will
be creating an infographic.
Starting on the first page of the WebQuest, click on the link at the bottom to
proceed to the Colorado recreation overview page.
View the video and map of Colorado. Ask the students to get into groups to
decide which region theyll be focusing on.
After the groups have decided on their region, have each share what area and
why they chose it.
Day Two:
Start the lesson off with the WebQuest on the Smartboard. Starting with the
Colorado Recreation page, show the students how to click on the links to go to
their regions page. Using on of the regions quickly go through student
expectations (i.e. view the video, do the research etc)
Explain that to day is for research and tomorrow theyll create their infographic.
Have students get into groups and pass out devices.
Day Three and Four:
Have the WebQuest on the Smartboard
Have students share some of the information they found the previous day.
Steer the conversation to highlight how the region's recreation supports economy
and why its important for Colorado.
Go to the Whats an Infographic page.
Watch the video
Use the infographics to analyze details as a group discussion.
Focus the student's attention on
1.The use of pictures to help illustrate the information
2. Using the layout to help your infomation
3. Including important information in a controlled way (i.e. not to text
heavy)
4. The use of different fonts and colors
5. Citing your sources.
6. Creativity!
Go to the Creating an Infographic page
Scroll to the rubric and quickly explaining the components to the students.
Have students get into groups and pass out devices.
(Day 3 and 4)Students need to complete their research and start on their
infographics
When all groups are done, its time to share and give constructive feedback as a
class.

Student Directed Activities:


Day One:
Participate in class discussion
With your partner decide on a region of Colorado to research.
Day Two:
With your partner, research your regions information page on the WebQuest.
Keep notes on the interesting facts and information you gather.
Discuss with your partner ways you can show your information, think creatively!
Day Three and Four:
Go to the Creating an Infographic page
Review the rubric and expectations with your partner.
View the How to Create video
View the variety of infographics on the Pinterest board in the WebQuest to get
ideas.
Using Easel.ly (embedded on page) start creating.

The students will be creating an infographic to illustrate the information they found
regarding recreational activities in different regions of Colorado. The above rubric will
be used to assess their project. The class will also view the infographics together as a
whole and give Constructive Feedback with classroom discussion and exit tickets.
