case in point is the choice of the 93-seat

IFC is Russias launch customer for the
Canadian CSeries that has kicked off its trials,
with plans providing for supplying it to foreign
air carriers in the first place. What do you think
is the planes competitive edge? Why did IFC
choose it?
Comparing the CSeries with the Airbus
A319 that has a similar seating capacity being
a shrink version of the A320 baseline model,
one can easily notice that the European
airliner is far heavier than the Canadian is.
The operational empty weight of the CSeries
is as many as 12 t less! Along with lower fuel
consumption, this has extended its range
considerably. This is what can be achieved by
skilful optimisation of a particular model with
the 110150-seat capacity. Other strengths of
the CSeries are its cutting-edge technologies
and avionics and excellent environmental

MIG-29K
BACK ON DECK
REPORT FROM VIKRAMADITYA
Mid-September 2013 saw the successful completion of all kinds of tests of the Project 11430 Vikramaditya aircraft
carrier the former Russian Navy Northern Fleets Admiral Gorshkov through-deck cruiser upgraded by Sevmash JSC
for the Indian Navy. The final phase of the trials took place in the Barents Sea and was aimed at completing the testing of
the ships aircraft operations equipment, i.e. the hardware relevant to aircraft basing and operation. Naturally, the focus
of the trials was the flights of MiG-29K/KUB multirole fighters, the major calibre of the ship. The tests were arranged by
Sevmash JSC and RSK MiG Corp. assisted by the Northern Fleet command element, Defence Ministry State Flight Test
Centre and Kamov JSC. According to the news release by MiG Corp. with respect to the MiG-29K/KUB fighter trials on
board the Vikramaditya during August and September 2013, in the course of the sorties, MiG Corp. aircrews tested the
aircraft operations equipment of the aircraft carrier. The test programme included, among other things, a series of night
sorties from the carrier, takeoffs and deck landings in pairs at minimal time intervals and flights with the full payload.
In all, the deck flight trials phase during August and September 2013 witnessed two planes a MiG-29K and a
MiG-29KUB logged 57 sorties, including 47 deck landings. 12 takeoffs and deck landings were performed at night,
which had not been done by Russian carrierborne aviators since 1999. In addition, tests of the Kamov Ka-27PL and
Ka-31R helicopters and their compatibility with the carriers aircraft operations equipment were conducted at the same
time. Overall, 30 helicopter sorties were flown from the deck, let alone the SAR support provided to the fighter trials by
the Northern Fleets Ka-27PS aircrews.
Take-offs correspondents covered those flights in August and September 2013.

rocket and space corporation, was crowned

by a full-scale mock-up of the re-entry
vehicle of the New-Generation Future
Spacecraft (PTK NP in Russian). The
mock-up displayed in Zhukovsky two years
ago looked far more basic. This one featured
a high degree of detail elaboration of the
exterior, offering a better idea of both the
exterior and interior layout of the re-entry
vehicle.
The PTK NP is designed for lunar expe-
ditions, orbiter transport/technical support
and research. As conceived, the launch
weight of the spacecraft on lunar missions
is to account for about 20 t and on expedi-
tions to low-Earth orbit (LEO) for around
14 t. The spacecraft measures about 6 m in
length and 14 m across with its solar panels
extended.
The PTK NP is made of advanced alu-
minium alloys featuring a 1.21.5-time
increase in strength and is coated in ther-
mal protection materials, which density is
thrice as low as that of the in-service Soyuz
TMA spacecraft. The PTK NP boasts a
large-scale use of carbon-filled plastics and
three-layer structures. Its control system has
been upgraded considerably, too, and fitted
with laser rendezvous and docking aids and
other advanced hardware as well.
The re-entry vehicle, which measures 4 m
high without the landing supports extended
and has a maximum diameter of 4.5 m,
will be reusable. Energia presumes that the
construction of five re-entry vehicles will
be enough for the programme to be imple-
mented. The engine bay will be disposable

At MAKS 2013, the Zvezda scientific and

Orlan-MKS spacesuit designed for spacewalks.
According to Chief Designer Sergey

Another novelty is that the Orlan-MKSs
