E. Connecting GDS HD to a Vehicle

1.Testing the Connection

Check that the SD card is correctly installed.
Connect scan tool with VCI diagnostic box to the diagnostic cable.
Select the correct connector for the vehicle diagnostic socket. Connect
the VCI box with the vehicle diagnostic socket.
Use the universal jumper box to test if there is no suitable connector in
the kit. Follow these instructions:
a. Test the diagnostic socket using a multi-meter before connecting, to
confirm the positive and negative pins, K communication line or CAN
BUS communication line.
b. Avoid shaking the cable. This may cause a short circuit and destroy
the electronic components, as the terminal spacing is very small.
c. Incorrect connection can destroy the ECU or the electronic
components in the scan tool. For example, reversing the positive and
negative pins, or treating the positive as the K line, will destroy
diagnostic equipment. If the H line is connected to the L line on the CAN
BUS, there will be no connectivity.
d. For illustrations of diagnostic sockets and cables, refer to page 34.
Check that the scan tool power light is on.

Follow this connection diagram:

2.Notes on Establishing the Diagnostic Connection

Check that the normal working voltage, 12 V or 24 V, is present.

Avoid forcing the cable into the socket or pulling the cable hard.
Remember that fault diagnosis requires paying attention to all factors. For
example, the cylinder test for some vehicles requires an engine water
temperature of engine of 80 -105 switch of lights and air conditioning,
loosen pedal, etc.
Diesel vehicles and the electronic control system are complex. If a connection
cannot be established, or testing data are wrong, please check the correct
ECU model.
Consider updating the software if the vehicle model or diesel electronic
control system is not in the menu, or contact technical support.
Using a diagnostic cable not supplied with this scan tool may cause data loss
or damage.
Do not unplug the SD card, to avoid losing test data.
Do not power the scan tool off when it is connected to a vehicle. Cancel
the diagnostic procedure first; then, power off the scan tool.
Do not shake or strike the scan tool. Touch the screen gently, to ensure a
long working life and to maintain the warranty on the unit.
Power the scan tool off when not in use.

GDS

Reading ECU data

This function displays system identification or system information in

some drive-by-wire vehicle. Both terms mean the same thing: software
version, hardware version, ECU, etc.. See below.

Reading fault codes

Select the read fault code function to read fault codes stored in the vehicles
ECU. if there are no fault codes in the ECUthe screen displays no fault code
present or system is normalas shown below.

Note: when diagnosing faults, if the display shows system is normal or no

fault code presentthere are no faults stored in the ECU or there are some
other faults which cannot be detected by the ECU. Check for these faults via
the data stream function.

20
GDS

If there are fault codes stored in the ECU, the screen will display all fault codes,
as follows.

Note: The first fault codes detected are not necessarily the most important for clearing
faults. When driving the vehicle or running one of the systems, the ECU diagnoses the
entire system continuously. Faults could be caused by driving conditions. These may be
unrelated to actual vehicle faults.

Record the fault codes first detected. Delete them; then, read the codes again. Codes
that cannot be deleted indicate problems to be fixed. If all fault codes can be erased
but the problems persist, start the vehicle and read the fault codes after driving. A
fault code that continues to be displayed indicates what needs to be repaired.

21
GDS

Reading the freeze frame

Go back and select freeze frame to read the freeze frame data. For example,
when reading the freeze frame data of fault code P0188choose fault code
of P0188 then selectfreeze frameThe freeze frame data will display, as
shown below.

Note: not all ECUs have the freeze frame function. Freeze frame data means that
when recording a fault code, the ECU will also save all data relating to this fault code,
including input and output data.

22
GDS

Erasing fault codes

Select erase fault codes to erase the ECU memory. This function will erase
all current and historical fault codes. Make sure you record the fault codes
before erasing. See below.

After pressingYes to erase fault codesif communication is normal, the

system will display Erase fault codes successfully or Fault codes removed. If
you need to read fault codes again after erasing, make sure if the fault codes are
erased. See below.

23
GDS

Reading data stream

Go to the testing function menu, select read data stream for the dynamic and
static data stream on the system. Note: select and display the individual data
streams as required. Some data streams require the engine to be running and
some do not. See below.

After selecting the data itemspress OK to display real-time data. See
