Leonid Meteors' Threat to Spacecraft Called Elevated but not Serious

The Nov. 17 Leonids meteor storm will present an elevated, though not serious,
threat
to spacecraft in the vicinity of the Earth for about half a day, according to NASA
and
Department of Defense experts, who have been studying the potential risk to
spacecraft.

NASA Contributes Technology to War on Cancer

In observance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, NASA will


release information on new ways aerospace research and technology is
helping in the understanding, detection and treatment of all types of
cancer.

ITEM 1: MARS POLAR LANDER ARRIVES AT KENNEDY SPACE CENTER


NASA's Mars Polar Lander arrived at Kennedy Space Center on October 1, to
undergo
final preparations for launch. The launch of the Mars Polar Lander is targeted for
January
3, 1999. The solar-powered spacecraft is designed to touch down near the planet's
south
pole, at the edge of Mars' thin, carbon dioxide ice sheet. The mission's objective is
to
study the water cycle at the Martian south pole. The lander also will help scientists
learn
more about the history of climate change on Mars and the distribution of its current
resources, by studying frosts, dust, water vapor and condensates in the Martian
atmosphere.
