REPORT ON THE SOIL INVESTIGATION FOR THE PROPOSED

RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

AT J.P. NAGARA 7TH PHASE, BANGALORE

PROPOSED PROJECT : Residential Apartment Building

LOCATION : J P Nagara 7th Phase

CLIENTS NAME : M/s. SRI SAI HRVY BUILDERS PVT. LTD.

Site No 154, 16th Main, Kothnur
Village Main Road, J P Nagar,
Bangalore

1. OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of this investigation is,
1. to establish the type of subsoil and depth of Ground water
2. to assess the allowable bearing pressure at different depths based on field and
laboratory testing and hence to recommend on the depth and type of foundation.

2. SCOPE OF THE WORK

The scope of work includes,
i) Drilling the bore holes at the specified location using Hand auger up to the
refusal strata or to a maximum of 6.0m, whichever occurs earlier.
ii) Conducting Standard Penetration test at every 1.5m depth or where ever
strata changes, in each of the boreholes
iii) Collecting undisturbed and Representative samples in each of the strata for
the laboratory tests.
iv) Conducting suitable laboratory tests on Soil samples for different Index and
Engineering properties.
This report consists of the details about the various laboratory tests and field tests
performed and the recommendations made based on the results of the tests.

3. NUMBER OF BOREHOLES
FIVE bore holes are planned to obtain the sub-surface stratification. The location and
number of the Bore holes are selected as per the directions of the client. The locations of
the boreholes is shown in Fig.1

4. FIELD INVESTIGATION

4.1 Boring and Sampling : Diameter - 150 mm

: Type of Boring - Hand Auger

150 mm diameter boring was carried out in accordance with IS: 1892: -1979 Code of
Practice for sub-surface investigation of foundation using Augers. Representative /
undisturbed samples were collected at different depth as the bore holes were sunk.
Standard penetration tests were conducted at different depths as the borehole was
advanced down. The samples collected were used for different laboratory test.

4.2 Standard penetration test

Standard penetration tests (SPT) were conducted at different depths in all the bore holes
as the bore hole was advanced down and the N values were recorded. The SPT was
carried out according to 1S 2131-1981 SPT (Standard penetration test, Re affirmed
in1992). The number of blows required to drive a 50mm diameter split spoon sampler
for a depth of 30cm using a 65 kg hammer is recorded as N value. The results of all the
penetration tests performed in each of the bore holes are shown in their respective Bore
logs. The test is halted if,
i) 50 blows are required for any 150 mm penetration
ii) 100 blows are required for 30cm penetration
iii) 10 successive blows produce no advance
and correspondingly the N value is recorded as REFUSAL.

4.3 LABORATORY TESTS

The following laboratory tests were carried out as per the Indian Standards IS 2720.
1. In situ density and water content 2. Grain size analysis
3. Atterberg limits 4. Shear tests.

5. TEST RESULTS
The field test results in the form of Bore logs are presented in Fig.2 to Fig.6.
The Laboratory test results are presented in Table.1.

6. RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the extensive field investigation and laboratory testing, the following
conclusions and recommendations are drawn.

6.1 ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE

Both shear failure and settlement criteria are considered while arriving at the final
value of Allowable Bearing pressure. The values of allowable bearing pressure are
calculated at different depth (for a footing width of 1m). The following allowable bearing
pressure, which gives a factor of safety of 3.0 against shear failure and for an allowable
settlement of 25mm is recommended. The test results apply to the area in and around
the borehole only.

Location: Residential Apartment Building at J.P. Nagara 7th Phase

Natural ground pressure,
level, T/m2

2.0 21

3.0 30

4.0 40

6.2 MINIMUM DEPTH

The minimum depth of foundation should be at least 1.5m below the natural ground
level. Any compressible, loose, filled up top soil should be avoided as the foundation
base. For the present structure the minimum depth of foundation is 2.0m
from the ground level.

Page |3
6.3 TYPE OF FOUNDATION
The type of foundation at a given Allowable bearing pressure is controlled by the
magnitude and type of loading.
* Individual/ Combined footing may be designed with the above recommended
Allowable Bearing pressures and all the column footings should be
proportioned for equal settlement.
* The area of coverage of the footings should not be more than half of the total
construction area. If so, a Raft FOUNDATION SYSTEM is recommended.

6.4 OTHER PRECAUTIONS

(i) Any accumulation of water in the foundation trench should be avoided before
Concreting for the foundation.
(ii) The bottom of the foundation trench should be well compacted before
Concreting.

CALCULATION OF ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE
Ref: I.S. 2131 1963, I.S. 6403-1981, I.S. 8009 (PART I)-1976

Soil Parameters:

At a depth of 2.0m from ground level,

c = 0.15 t/m2, = 240 and = 1.90 t/m3

SHEAR FAILURE CONDITION

Bearing capacity factors: Depth factors:

Nq = e tan tan2 (45 + /2) dc = 1+0.2 (Df /B) tan (45 + /2)
= e tan24tan2 (45 + 24/2) = 1+ 0.2 (2.0/1) tan (45 + 24/2)
= 9.60 = 1.62

Nc = (Nq 1) Cot dq = d = 1 + 0.1 ((Df /B) tan (45 + /2)

=(9.60-1) Cot 240 = 1+ 0.1 (2.0/1) tan (45 +24/2)
=19.32 = 1.31

N = 2 (Nq+1) tan
= 2 (9.60+ 1) tan 240
= 9.44

Shape factors: Sc = 1.3, Sq = 1.2, S = 0.8

Substituting the above factors in,

Qf = cNcScdc + (Nq- 1) Sqdq + 0.5BN Sd

Qf = 66.79 t/m2
Using a factor of safety of 3.0, Qa =22.26 t/m2

FROM SPT N VALUES

For a Corrected N value of 36 at a depth of 2.0m below ground level, settlement for a
pressure of 1 kg / cm2 for B = 1.0m is 12mm.
For an allowable settlement of 25mm, Qa = (10 x 25) 12
= 20.83 t/m2
The lower of the above two is taken as the allowable bearing pressure.
