Definition of Stress

Definition

A measure of the average amount of force exerted per

unit area of a surface within a deformable body

Normal stress: force perpendicular to the surface

Shear stress: force parallel to the surface

Engineering stress: force per unit area of initial surface

True stress: force per unit area of current surface
