Question 1

AW1049 section is used on a 15-ft span to support a 9 kip load applied

eccentrically at midspan as shown in the figure below . Determine the
stresses in the member and the torsional rotation at midspan

Solution

The eccentric load can be resolved into a torsinal moment and aload
applied through the shear center

M=Pe=54k-in

The stresses due to plane bending and those due to torsion are then
determined independently

Plane Bending stresses _1

: a. Maximum Longitudinal Bending stresses
These occur in the extreme fibers at midspan of the beam

Mb=P L/4 = (91512)/4 =405 K-in

b =Mb/ Sxx= 405/54.6=7.4 Ksi (compression at top; tension at bottom)

:b. Maximum Web Shear Stresses

b=VQu/I tweb =4.530.2/2730.340= 1.46 Ksi

b=1.46 Ksi

:c. Maximum Flange Shear Stresses

b=VQF/I tFlange =4.513.0/2730.558=0.38 Ksi

. For this loading the shear stresses are constant from the support to the load point

Torsional Stresses .2

a. Torsional Function
The web angle connection is assumed to provide a torsional pinned end
condition. Case 3 with =0.5 should threrfore be used for this problem
