Q1 (a) Explain what is meant by:
i. active instruments, and
ii. passive instruments.
Give examples of each and discuss the relative advantages of these two classes of
instruments.

(b) Briey dene and explain all the static characteristics of measuring instruments.

(c) Explain the difference between accuracy and precision in an instrument.
(3 marks)
(d) Explain the difference between systematic and random errors. What are the typical
sources of these two types of error?

(e) Define transducer. Mention some of the transducers. Briefly define the pressure
transducer.

(f) Compare the major differences between a thermocouple and an RTD.
(4 marks)

Q2 (a) Consider the block diagram in Figure Q2(a). Using block diagram reduction method,

reduce the block diagram to find the transfer function T=Y/U.

(b) Use Masons rule to find the transfer function T=Y/U, for the system shown in
Figure Q2(b)
