BarretookcontrolofSomaliainthelate1960s.Oneofhisfirstgoalswas
tohelpmorepeopleinhiscountrylearntoreadandwrite.In1973,Siad
Barre'sgovernmentnamedtheLatinalphabetastheofficialalphabetfor
theSomalilanguage.Thelanguageisthousandsofyearsold.Leaders
alsostartedaprogramtoteachpeopletoreadandwriteSomali.The
programwassuccessful.Inoneyear,theliteracyraterosefrom5percent
to20percent.Butnow,somepeopleareconcerned.TheyfeelthatSomali
literatureandcultureareunderthreat.They'rehopingthatabookfairwill
help.Thefairdisplayswrittenworksinthenationallanguage.

MahamoudheadsKaydSomaliArtsandCulture.That'sthegroupthatorganizestheHargeysaInternationalBookFair
everyyear.Thefairstartedin2008.Thesixdayfestivalcelebratesbooks,culture,andliterature.Thegoalhasbeento
keeptheeffectsofthecivilwarfromleadingtothedisappearanceofSomaliculture.

The2016festivalkickedoffinJulyinHargeysa.Authors,poets,composers,andartistsdisplayedtheirworkand
creativity.Thesemembersoftheliterarycommunity,alongwithreaders,gatheredtogether.Itwasn'tjusttheircommon
loveofbooksthatbroughtthemthere.Theyalsocametopreservetheirculture.

"Weareparticipatingwithouroldworktotellabouttheroleofliteratureandhowitbenefits[our]mothertongue,"said
FarahGamute,aparticipantinthefair.

AuthorAbdullahiAwadCigesaidhecametopassonhisexperiencestotheyoungergeneration.

commonloveofbooks,butalsotopreservetheirculture.
