condition comes up as part of
another topic. Hot spots are surface
skin infections that generally look
like circular bare patches in a dog’s

fur and can be painfully itchy. They
sometimes smell bad and ooze pus,
but the most common sign of a hot
spot is your dog being agitated and
constantly scratching, licking or
biting the affected area.
Dogs can develop hot spots from
scratching flea bites, underneath
tangled or matted hair, after
swimming at public beaches and
more.
Untreated hot spots will spread,
and while there are home remedies
-- like dabbing a 50/50 vinegar-
water solution on the spot a few
times daily -- your veterinarian can
recommend the most effective
treatment. Certainly, if home
treatment doesn’t work or your
dog’s condition worsens, you
should consult a vet.
Prevention -- or management after
a bout with hot spots -- is
important. After your dog goes
swimming, shower it off well, dry
as much as possible and wipe the
outer part of the ears with a dry
cotton ball. Treat regularly for fleas /FM/
to minimize their impact. Groom
your dog regularly -- especially if it
has a thick coat -- to prevent his
undercoat from getting matted and
trapping moisture and bacteria
against the skin.

Repair Concrete Steps With
Quick-Set Cement
Q: Two of the corners of the
steps leading up to my front door
have broken and crumbled away,
so that I can't even glue the fallen
corners back into place. Can these
corners be repaired? -- John in Elk
City, Idaho
A: Sure. With a few materials
and by placing a wood "form"
around the stair tread corners so
they hold shape, you can create a
reliable patch for these damaged
areas.
You'll need some sturdy
sheets of plywood (about 1/4-inch
thick) -- two cut to the height of
the riser (the vertical part of the
step) below the damaged areas and
two cut to reach from the damaged
corner to the bottom of the steps as
they'll be placed along the side.
Also, you'll need a wire brush,
an old paintbrush, a chisel, hammer
and nails, a trowel, wood float and
edger, sturdy gloves and eye
protection. Your repair materials
include concrete bonding adhesive
and quick-set cement.
First, prep the corners by
clearing out dirt and crumbled
cement with a wire brush. Next,
take a look at the broken corner: If
it's somewhat deep and a bit jagged
inside the damaged area -- as long

Next, set up wood forms around
each corner, so that the sides of the
plywood are flush with the sides of
the concrete steps. Secure with one
or two nails and, if needed, brace
with a heavy object like a concrete
block.
Mix your quick-set concrete fairly
thick (the necessary ratio should be
on the side of the container). With
the old paintbrush, spread bonding
adhesive over the first repair area.
Follow by pressing the concrete
mix into the repair area with a
trowel until the corner of the form
is filled and flush with the top of
the step. Smooth with a wood float.
Repeat this with the second repair
area.
Let the concrete set for about 30
minutes, then carefully pull back
the forms and use an edger to
round off the front edge of the
patch and then the side edge.
Smooth excess from the bottom of
the corner patch, then replace the
forms and brace.
If it's a hot, dry day, cover the
repaired areas with plastic so that
they can set properly. Let them dry
for at least 24 hours, and keep foot
traffic away from the new corners
for about a week.
HOME TIP: Painting concrete
surfaces can protect them from the
elements and hide mismatched
repair areas, but be sure to use
paint specifically formulated for
concrete.

homeowners, renters and businesses eligible for low-interest
loans for damages suffered in the severe storms that spawned
devastating tornadoes last month.

interest loans to help homeowners and businesses whose
properties were ravaged by these weather phenomena and
speed the recovery.”

York State Office of Emergency Management to work with the

damages incurred. The results of that assessment showed that
26 homes and one business surveyed suffered uninsured losses
of 40 percent or more of their estimated pre-disaster fair
market value.
Low-interest economic injury SBA loans provide working
capital to assist eligible small businesses recover from losses
caused by a disaster or emergency such as the July storms.
Small businesses impacted may be eligible for an economic
injury disaster loan of up to $2 million to meet necessary
financial obligations -- expenses the business would have paid
if the disaster had not occurred.
