Teacher Name: Joslyn Williams

Subject: Physics
Date: January 11, 2015
Class: 10M/ 10N
Duration: Two (2) Hours
No. of Students:
General Topic: Energy
Sub Topic: Potential Energy (Ep) and Kinetic Energy (Ek)
General Objectives: To make students aware of the different forms of energy and to understand
that energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transformed from one
form to another.
Specific Objectives:
Define Potential Energy;
Calculate the change in gravitational potential energy using : Ep = mgh;
Define kinetic energy;
1
Calculate kinetic energies using the expression : Ek = 2 mv2;

Energy
Energy is the capacity of a physical system to perform work.
Potential energy, is the energy associated with forces that depend on the position
or configuration of an object (or objects) relative to the surroundings.
Example of this form of energy, for example, battery, stretched spring or elastic
band, object on shelf
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, it is from the Greek word kinetikos,
meaning motion

Example of this form of energy, for example, a moving vehicle on a highway, a

person walking, a thrown baseball, a crumb falling from a table, and a charged particle in
an electric field.

Lesson Development:
Introduction: At the beginning of the lesson, teacher will ask students to define energy
in their own words and to give the name of the two main types of energy.

Step 1: Class will discuss the responses given and corrections will be made to
them where necessary.

Step 2: A proper definition of energy will be given as notes.

Step 3: Class will be asked to give examples of equations of motion covered in

previous lessons.

Step 4: Class will be asked, What are the two main form of energy? after which
a proper definition and examples of both will be given.

Step 5: Class will be given the relevant equations and examples of both forms of
energy.

Step 6: Exercises will be given linking the forms of energy and the equations of
motion.
