1.0 OBJECTIVE
. To determine the aggregate impact value in the laboratory.

2.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students should be able to apply the knowledge and skills they
have learned to:
a. Understand the aggregate impact value.

3.0 INTRODUCTION / THEORY

Impact value of an aggregate is the percentage loss pf weight of particles passing 2.36mm
sieve by the application on load by mean of 15 blows of standard hammer and drop under
specified test condition. The aggregate impact value gives a relation measure of the resistance
of an aggregate to sudden shock or impact, which in some aggregates differs from their
resistance to a slowly applied compressive load.

General: Normally the aggregate impact value of base course is 30, bituminous bound
macadam is about 35 and the cement concrete base course is 30.

Significance: The test gives an idea of toughness of the aggregate to resist facture under the
impact of moving loads.

Weighing Balanced

A cylinder of internal diameter 7.5cm and

5cm deep for measure aggregate.

10mm Sample

Impact Testing Machine:

Its consists of a cylindrical hammer of 13.5
kg. (30Ibs) sliding freely between two
vertical supports (called guides). Its fall is
automatically adjusted to a height of 38cm.
There is a brass plate over which an open
cylindrical steel cup of internal diameter
10.2cm and 5cm depth is placed and fixed to
the brass plate.

Sieves: 12.5mm, 10mm and 2.36mm

5.0 PROCEDURE

1. Sieve the aggregate and obtain the portion passing 12.5mm and retained on 10mm sieve.
2. Wash and dry this aggregate at a constant temperature of 1050C to 1100C and then cool the
sample.
3. Fill this aggregate in the cylindrical measure in 3 layers, tapping each layers 25 times with the
tamping rod. Level the surface tamping road as a using the straight edge.
4. Weight the aggregate in the measure. This weight of the aggregate is used for the duplicate test
on the same material.
5. Transfer the aggregate from the cylindrical measure to the cup in 3 layers and compact each
layer by tamping in 25 strokes with the tamping rod.
6. Release the hammer for fall freely on the aggregate. The test sample is subjected to a total of 15
blows.
7. Remove the aggregate sample from the cup and sieve through 2.36 mm sieve.
8. Weight the fraction passing the sieve.

IMPACT VALUE

1) The sample had been selected for the

experiment. The sized of the sample is 10mm.

2) The sample was put in the cylinder measure in

three level until it full. For the first level, the
sample was tapped for 25 times and repeated
until the third level.

3) The fully cylinder measure with the sample

was measured with weighing balance.

4) After that, the sample has been moved into

other cylinder measure.

5) The sample was ready for the test.

6) After the test, the sample was sieved.

7) The sample that has been sieved was

measured to get data and result.

8) This test was repeated for the second

8.0 DISCUSSION

Chief advantage of aggregate impact test is that test equipment and the test procedure are
quite simple and it determines the resistance to impact of stones simulating field condition. The test
can be performed in a short time even at construction site or at stone quarry, as the apparatus is
simple and portable. Well shaped cubical stones provide higher resistance to impact when compared
with flaky and elongated stones. It is essential that the first specimen to be tested from each sample
of aggregate is equal in volume; this is ensured by taking the specimen in the measuring cylinder in
the specified manner by tamping in three layers. If all the test specimens to be tested in the aggregate
impact testing mould are of equal volume, the height of these specimens will also be equal and hence
the height of fall of the impact rammer on the specimens will be equal. On the other hand, if equal
weight of different aggregate sample are taken, their volume and height may vary depending upon the
specific gravity of the aggregates and their shape factors.
During the experiment, different data will be called when the weighting process because of
wind resistance. The sample data may be higher or lower than the reading data because of the
reading error.Beside that, the distance of the person hand while tamping may cause different result.
Tamping layer also can effect the error reading because its done manually and not consistence.

9.0 CONCLUSION

From the experiment, we get the value is 10.36% less than the requirement of JKRs; 15%.Aggregate
physical property must lower Aggregate Impact Value, AIV because is tougher and resistance to
crushed. We can conclude that the aggregate been used are medium tough and resistant to be crash.
Its because the value are more than half than JKRs requirement. These experiments are successful
because its still not exceed the JKRs requirement
