* For operating temperatures less than -20 C, the cold weather cable is required. Additional heating of oil transfer lines may be required
for operation in cold locations. The unit will generate a system fault if the mineral oil temperature is outside of standard fluid limits of
-20 and 120 C. For operating in environments where the temperature routinely exceeds 40 C, the high temperature accessory is
recommended to prevent premature aging and reduction of component lifetime. Temperatures are based upon air temperatures for unit
installation in shaded location.

5 Transformer and LTC Criteria

5.1 Transformer Criteria

The electromagnetic fields around the transformer must meet the IEC 61000-6-5 standard.
If the transformer environment is greater than this EMC standard, more discussion is needed
before proceeding any further. Contact support@lumasenseinc.com.
If connecting a SmartDGA Instrument to a valve that is within four (4) meters of an energy
source (such as the bushings), an outage will be needed for installation. Otherwise it is up to the
substation managers discretion whether or not they want an outage for installation.

Note: If an outage is required or desired for the installation, it needs to be approved

and/or scheduled for the installation date.

Outage needed
if < 4m from an
energy source

5.2 LTC Criteria

Oil must be filtered by a Filmax filtration unit. Filmax is the only type of filtration unit that
is compatible with the SmartDGA system.
The Filmax filtration unit must be shutdown prior to installation.

Caution: Never sample oil directly from the LTC to the SmartDGA Instrument.

A side stream of oil is connected from the LTC tank to the Filmax filtration unit.
The SmartDGA Instrument will then sample the filtered oil from the FIlmax filtration unit.

6 Plumbing

6.1 Transformer Valves

All transformers have different valve configurations so you will need to assess the type, size,
location, and clearance of your transformer valves. This will allow you to determine how you will
connect your SmartDGA instrument to the transformer, as well as determine which valve kit you will
need for mounting it.

Fill Valve

Ancillary Valve

Drain Valve

6.1.1 Drain Valve

The drain valve is located near the bottom of the transformer tank. This is the ideal valve to use for
sampling oil from the transformer.
6.1.2 Fill Valve
The fill valve is located near the top of the transformer tank. This is the ideal valve to use for
returning oil back to the transformer.

Note: This valve should never be used to sample oil from the transformer because there
is no guarantee that oil will always be at this position.

6.1.3 Ancillary Valves

Some transformers have various ancillary valves in random locations. If necessary, these can be used
in place of the drain valve and/or fill valve for sampling and/or returning oil.

SmartDGA Pre-Installation Manual Plumbing 20

6.2 SmartDGA Valve Kits
For each measurement cycle, the SmartDGA instrument samples oil from the transformer or LTC
filtration unit, extracts the gases, analyzes them, and then returns the oil back to the transformer or
LTC filtration unit. With this process in mind, there are three types of valve kits available for
mounting and connecting the SmartDGA instrument to the transformer or LTC filtration unit.
Detailed mounting criteria for each valve kit are provided in Chapter 7.
6.2.1 Single Valve Kit (VA-1)
With this kit, the SmartDGA instrument is mounted directly on the transformer drain valve. The oil
is sampled and returned from this drain valve through a single stainless steel pipe.

Note: This kit is only compatible if the drain valve is a ball, gate, or plug valve.

Note: This mounting approach has inherent limitations and risks and should only be used
when the VA-0 and VA-2 options are not viable.

Drain Valve

Flow of the oil

6.2.2 Dual Valve Kit (VA-2)

With this kit, the SmartDGA instrument is mounted directly on the transformer drain valve. The oil
is sampled from the drain valve and returned to the fill valve.

Fill Valve

Flow of the oil

Drain Valve

SmartDGA Pre-Installation Manual Plumbing 21

6.2.3 Inline Valve Kit (VA-0)
With this off-transformer kit, the SmartDGA instrument is connected to a mounting plate which is
then attached to the transformer wall, a Unistrut H-frame, or other appropriate flat surface. Oil is
sampled and returned using two different valves (ideally the drain and fill valves).
This is also the only valve kit that can be used for connecting to a LTC. In this case, oil is sampled
and returned using valves in the Filmax filtration unit.

Oil Return Valve

Flow of the oil

6.2.4 Optional Extra Valve with Tee

If you will need to preserve the ability to use the drain valve for sampling the oil directly from the
transformer, a stainless steel tee and extra valve (with plug) will need to be installed prior to
installation.

7 Mounting for the SmartDGA Instrument

Caution: The SmartDGA Instrument must be installed in a location that is shaded

throughout the day. Rapid sunlight induced heating will negatively affect the
accuracy of measurements. With this in mind, you may need to install a separate
sunshade over the SmartDGA instrument after the installation is complete. LumaSense
offers free design plans for covering SmartDGA instruments that are mounted on a
Unistrut H-frame.

7.1 Clearance around the Mounting Location

When choosing a mounting location, check to ensure that it is suitable for the dimensions of the
SmartDGA instrument and that there is enough clearance for workmanship. For VA-1 or VA-2 kits,
this will be area around the drain valve. For VA-0, this will be the area around where the mounting
plate is attached. Minimum clearance requirements are listed below, but in general we recommend
there be approximately three square feet around the mounting location.
If obstructing objects cannot be moved, a new valve or mounting approach will need to be chosen.
If no locations are feasible, please consult with LumaSense for alternative mounting.

Note: The SmartDGA Instrument is designed for vertical installation. Horizontal

installation is not recommended.

7.1.1 Minimum Clearances (at drain valve or mounting plate location)

Distance left of the drain valve or mounting plate > 18 (45.7 cm)
Distance right of the drain valve or mounting plate > 18 (45.7 cm)
Distance from drain valve or mounting plate to the ground > 12 (25.5 cm)
Distance from drain valve or mounting plate to the top obstruction > 17 (45.7 cm)

7.2 Criteria for Single Valve Mounting (VA-1)

7.2.1 Thread Type of the Drain Valve
In order to connect the SmartDGA instrument to the drain valve using this valve kit, the thread type
of the drain valve needs to be female 1 NPT.
If it is not a 1 NPT thread type, you will need an NPT Reducer that decreases the NPT size from the
present transformer drain valve size to the required 1 NPT size.

Note: If the thread type for the drain valve is greater than 2 NPT, please contact
LumaSense for additional options (such as an adapter plate or fire hose adapter).

LumaSense offers two types of reducers, but they must be ordered separately:
2 to 1 NPT Reducer (LumaSense PN 90-2382)
1.5 to 1 NPT Reducer (LumaSense PN 90-2381)

SmartDGA Pre-Installation Manual Mounting for the SmartDGA Instrument 24

7.3 Criteria for Dual Valve Mounting (VA-2)
7.3.1 Thread Type of the Drain Valve
In order to mount this valve kit on the drain valve, the thread type for the drain valve needs to be
female 1 NPT. If it is not a 1 NPT thread type, you will need an NPT Reducer that decreases the
NPT size from the present transformer drain valve size to the required 1 NPT size.

LumaSense offers two types of reducers, but they must be ordered separately:
2 to 1 NPT Reducer (PN 90-2382)
1.5 to 1 NPT Reducer (PN 90-2381)

Note: If the thread type for the drain valve is greater than 2 NPT, please contact
LumaSense for additional options (such as an adapter plate, fire hose adapter, etc.).

When choosing a location for mounting the EZHub, you will also need to keep in mind the distance
to the power source, the distance to SmartDGA instrument(s), and the distance to the iCore (if
applicable). The EZHub unit is typically mounted in a substation control building, a transformer
control cabinet, or a NEMA4X enclosure. NEMA 4X Enclosures are available from LumaSense, but
they must be ordered separately.

Caution: If mounting the EZHub in a NEMA 4X enclosure, keep in mind that direct
sunlight can cause temperatures to reach above the maximum rated ambient
temperature of 55 C, in which case it is recommended that you install a separate
sunshade over the NEMA 4X enclosure after installing the SmartDGA monitoring system.
A shaded installation location is recommended.

Note: If you will be mounting the EZHub unit in a NEMA 4x enclosure, you will need to
mount the enclosure on a wall, Unistrut stand, or Unistrut H-frame prior to installation.

10 Mounting for the LumaSMART iCore
(optional)

10.1 Mounting Type and Location

In order to configure and operate the SmartDGA system with the software, you will need an
external computer or iCore.
If using an iCore it can be mounted either on a flat surface (wall mount) or in a hole/slot (panel
mount). Both types of brackets and hardware are sent with each order. The iCore is typically
mounted in the same NEMA 4X enclosure as the EZHub, although it can be located in any location if
the environmental requirements are met.

Caution: The mounting position and location chosen for the iCore should ensure that the
vents on the top of the iCore box will not be blocked during normal operation. Blocked
vents could cause the iCore to overheat.

Caution: Direct sunlight will cause heating of the enclosure and may cause overheating
beyond the temperature rating of the iCore.

Note: If mounting in a NEMA4X enclosure, keep environmental conditions in mind. Direct

sunlight can cause temperatures to reach above the maximum rated ambient temperature
of 70 C. Direct sunlight will greatly reduce the apparent contrast of the iCore LCD display
and make it difficult to operate. A shaded installation location is recommended.
