1.2 Legend
Note: Indicates tips and useful information in this manual. All notes should be read to
effectively operate the instrument.
If LumaSense Technologies will be performing the installation of your SmartDGA system, you will be
required to verify that you have completed all the necessary pre-installation tasks as explained in
this manual before an installation can be scheduled. Mark the checkbox next to each of the tasks
listed below that you have completed and then sign and submit a copy of this page to your RSM.
Task Description Done N/A
Identified an appropriate mounting location and transformer valve(s) for connecting the SmartDGA
Instrument(s)
If necessary, appropriate reducers and/or adapters have been installed on the transformer valves
Appropriate valve kit(s) has been chosen for mounting/connecting each SmartDGA Instrument(s)
If using an Inline (VA-0) valve kit, installed any necessary hardware (such as Unistrut) for supporting
the mounting plate
If using a Dual Valve (VA-2) or Inline (VA-0) valve kit, appropriate length of stainless steel or flexible
tubing is ready on-site
If necessary, a stainless steel tee and extra valve has been installed on the drain valve
If using a NEMA 4X enclosure, all communication and relay cables are ran to it using conduit
If not using a NEMA 4X enclosure, power is ran to the EZHub location using conduit
If not using a NEMA 4X enclosure, power is ran to the iCore location using conduit
If necessary or desired, an outage has been scheduled and approved for the installation date
All necessary tools for the installation (not provided by LumaSense) are ready on-site
I confirm that this pre-installation manual has been reviewed and understood in its entirety and
that all necessary site preparation tasks have been completed (as marked above) in order for
LumaSense Technologies to proceed with the installation of our SmartDGA System.
Note: The LumaSMART iCoreTM is not required to operate the SmartDGA system.
Note: The installation of any sunshade(s) must be done by the customer after the
installation of the SmartDGA system.

Caution: Never sample oil directly from the LTC to the SmartDGA Instrument.
A side stream of oil is connected from the LTC tank to the Filmax filtration unit.
The SmartDGA Instrument will then sample the filtered oil from the FIlmax filtration unit.

Drain Valve
Note: This valve should never be used to sample oil from the transformer because there
is no guarantee that oil will always be at this position.
Note: This kit is only compatible if the drain valve is a ball, gate, or plug valve.
Note: This mounting approach has inherent limitations and risks and should only be used
when the VA-0 and VA-2 options are not viable.

Note: If the thread type for the drain valve is greater than 2 NPT, please contact
LumaSense for additional options (such as an adapter plate or fire hose adapter).
LumaSense offers two types of reducers, but they must be ordered separately:
2 to 1 NPT Reducer (LumaSense PN 90-2382)
1.5 to 1 NPT Reducer (LumaSense PN 90-2381)

Note: If the thread type for the drain valve is greater than 2 NPT, please contact
LumaSense for additional options (such as an adapter plate, fire hose adapter, etc.).
LumaSense also offers a Swagelok adapter (PN SS-600-1-16) that will thread into a female 1 NPT
reducer and accept 3/8 tubing, but it must be ordered separately.
7.3.3 Distance between the Drain Valve and Return Valve
To ensure proper oil flow and pressure, the following distance requirements from the drain valve to
the return valve must be met.
Vertical distance from the drain valve to the return valve 3 to 20 (0.91 m to 6.1 m)
Piping distance from the drain valve to the return valve < 32.8 (10.0 m)
Example of connection to the Filmax Example of the connections on the Filmax filtration
filtration unit with stainless steel tubing. unit before connecting to the SmartDGA instrument.
When mounting with the VA-2 or VA-0 valve kits, 3/8 stainless steel tubing should be used for
connecting the SmartDGA instruments to valves on the transformer or LTC filtration unit.
Rubber pipe clamp needs to be used to secure the stainless steel tubing and you should never have
more than four (4) right angles for each connection from the DGA instrument to the valve.
Alternatively, flexible tubing can also be used.
Warning: Do not cross the top of the tank when routing tubing.
Note: Stainless steel tubing is not available from nor provided by LumaSense for
installation. Ensure you have enough tubing on-hand prior to installation.

Caution: If mounting the EZHub in a NEMA 4X enclosure, keep in mind that direct
sunlight can cause temperatures to reach above the maximum rated ambient
temperature of 55 C, in which case it is recommended that you install a separate
sunshade over the NEMA 4X enclosure after installing the SmartDGA monitoring system.
A shaded installation location is recommended.
Note: If you will be mounting the EZHub unit in a NEMA 4x enclosure, you will need to
mount the enclosure on a wall, Unistrut stand, or Unistrut H-frame prior to installation.
Note: If you will be mounting the EZHub unit in a substation control building or a
transformer control cabinet, you will need to mount the EZHub unit prior to installation.

Note: The communication cable provided will be unterminated on one end so that it can
be fed through conduit (if desired), cut to length, and then terminated (with two
provided Phoenix connectors). Any conduit needs to be laid down prior to installation.
Note: LumaSense provides connectors but does not supply a power cable for the EZHub.
Caution: The mounting position and location chosen for the iCore should ensure that the
vents on the top of the iCore box will not be blocked during normal operation. Blocked
vents could cause the iCore to overheat.
Caution: Direct sunlight will cause heating of the enclosure and may cause overheating
beyond the temperature rating of the iCore.

Data stored in the EZHub can be viewed using the DGA Viewer software installed on an external PC
or the LumaSmart iCore connected via RS485 or Ethernet connection. The USB connection is for
uploading and downloading functions (such as downloading data or uploading a new version of
firmware). Depending on your needs protocols may also be used for communications.

Note: If using an Ethernet Switch for multiple EZHubs connected to the iCore, you will
need one port for the iCore, one port for the network, and one port for each EZHub.
Note: If fiber optical cables are needed, the all-weather fiber optic should be used with a
rugged jacket. In addition, the fiber optic cables need to be routed into the trench or if
outside, the cables need to be protected with black PVC pipe or flexible conduit.
Note: We do not support the 32 bits system and other wireless connection beside DeltaX.
All SCADA/DCS, PLC systems should communicate via iCore with DGA viewer installed.
Note: The protocols must be updated to the latest version(s) in order to be compatible
with the EZHub.
