Activity/Experience Name: Cooking Apple Pies

INTENTIONS FOR LEARNING

Goal(s): Describe the general or long-term developmental focus of this experience.
List the California Preschool Learning Foundation(s) or California Infant/Toddler
Learning and Development Foundation(s) here:

1.0 Children expand their understanding of comparing, ordering, and measuring

objects.
3.1 Demonstrate an understanding that print in English is organized from left to right,
top to bottom, and that pages are turned from right to left when a book is read.
2.0 Children develop age-appropriate vocabulary.
3.1 Participate in group activities and cooperate with social expectations, group rules,
and roles.
1.5 Use the number name of the last object counted to answer the question, How
many...?
ALT-REG1: Maintains attention on own during activities that last for extended
periods of time
ELD1: Shows understanding of most information and concepts communicated in
English for both instructional and social purposes

Objectives: What specific and observable concepts or skill will the child learn,
explore, or discover? The child will be able to List the Preschool DRDP
Measure(s) or Infant/Toddler DRDP measure(s) here:

TCWBAT compare measurements when looking at a recipe

TCWBAT scoop, pour, and mix when cooking in the classroom.

TCWBAT look at a recipe from left to right and determine the next steps.

EXPERIENCE PLAN
Activity Description:

*Please photograph or video-record this experience and collect anecdotal notes.

After voting, the children will cook apple pies. First, they will scoop the (pre-cut) apples
into their baking tin. Then, they will scoop and measure the flour, sugar, and spices while
they pour them into their tin. After this step, the children will roll out their portion of the
dough to cover the top of their tin. If they want, they can pinch the dough to make it fit
around the tin.

Invitational Set-up: How will the experience be presented to invite participation or

provoke interest? (Provide a photograph of the set-up).

This was the set-up before Angie told me to put the ingredients in bowls. Also, we
pre-sprayed the tins and set them out for the children to grab on their own.

Specific vocabulary, teaching strategies, and open-ended questions you will keep in
mind (Using your textbook and/or Curriculum Frameworks, list specific ways you
will promote problem-solving and critical thinking beyond a simple recall of facts):

I used specific vocabulary such as teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, and other measurements.
Throughout the process I will ask them, What do you think we will do next? or Do
you know what comes next? Also, asking them if they do any of these steps at home.

*Please photograph or video-record this experience and collect anecdotal notes.

How is this experience personalized (i.e. modified) to meet the varying
developmental and individual needs of the children in your class? (e.g., older
children, younger children, specific needs or interests?)

The older children can help the younger children, and lead by example. I will be there to
help any children who need extra help. The children who are not able to measure things
out will simply practice fine motor skills by scooping and pouring into their bowls.

Specific materials needed that are not already accessible to children:

Pre-cut apples
Pre-made pie crust
Sugar
Flour
Nutmeg and Cinnamon

REFLECTION/EVALUATION
What did you do well?

I think I set up the activity well, after having Angie help me. Also, I feel that working
with every child individually instead of having a group cooking activity helped with
many skills.

How did the children respond to the experience presented? (Describe your
observations of childrens words and actions) What worked? What was difficult?
Were there any surprises?

Some children were very excited to make their own pie, while others were not as
interested because of personal preference. A few younger children were afraid that if they
left their current activity, it wouldnt be there when they came back. The children that
participated in the activity really focused on making their measurements precise and
listening to directions. They enjoyed rolling out the dough the most.

What additions or changes would you make if you were to do this activity again?
What did the children teach you (e.g. about curriculum, teaching, or children)?

If I did this activity again, I will individualize the recipes before, instead of having it one
big recipe. The children taught me that in cooking, it doesnt matter what the product is
because they love being part of the process. I know now that the oven cooks fast so I
would put them in for less time.
